Sprint Football Runs Past Penn, 38-13
September 18, 2021 | Sprint Football
How It HappenedÂ
The Cadets came out firing right from the opening kick off, scoring on the first play from scrimmage after quarterback JC Watson found Kraig Hamilton for a 69-yard touchdown pass just 20 seconds into the game.Â
The defense followed the offense's lead, forcing Penn to a five-play drive, highlighted by a Brett Boswell sack to force a Quaker punt. Watson and the offense got back to work at their own 26 yard line. Army would march down the field on the backs of Watson and starting running back Ryan Connors. The duo would combine for 56 rush yards and connect for an 18 yard touchdown pass to put the Cadets up two scores.Â
The next point would come from kicker Ben Abercrombie, who split the uprights on a 46-yard field goal attempt early in the second quarter. The junior would also contribute five extra points while also serving as the kickoff specialist for the team.Â
After a pair of quick Penn drives Army went on another run, picking apart the Quaker defense to build a seven-play, 67 yard drive capped off by a JC Watson touchdown run which was good for his third score of the game. The Black Knights would head into the break holding the 24-point advantage.Â
David Dickerson sparked the defensive effort at the start of the second half, coming up with a sack on third down to force a Quaker punt. The defense would force another three-and-out on the next Quaker possession. Jeremiah Garrett finished off the ensuing seven-play Army drive with a five-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter to put Army up 31-0.Â
The Black Knights defense would force yet another three-and-out thanks to James Bieler and Alex Sobeski. The Quaker punt was blocked by Laurence Dowd, and gave Army the ball back at the Penn 11 yard-line. Watson wasted no time at all, firing a pass to Donovan Mannion for the 11-yard score on the first play to put Army up 38-0.Â
The Quakers would go on to score two touchdowns, but it would not be enough to catch Army, who would go on to win their season opener, 38-13.Â
