Army Wins Game 2 over BU to Snap Terriers 17-Game Win Streak
April 09, 2021 | Softball
BOSTON – The Army West Point softball team won the latter game of its doubleheader against Boston University Friday afternoon at the BU Softball Field, 7-4. The Terriers slightly edged the Black Knights 1-0 in the first contest.
Â
The first game, which featured Alicyn Grete and BU's Ali DuBois in the circle, was unsurprisingly a pitchers duel. Grete entered the contest with an ERA of 1.81, the fourth lowest in the league. DuBois, who has allowed just five earned runs in 78.0 innings pitched this season, owns the best ERA in the Patriot League at 0.45.
Â
Grete struck out seven batters and allowed seven hits in 6.0 innings of work. The lone run of the game came in the third inning with BU's Kayla Roncin homering to center field. The result extended the Terriers win-streak to 17 games.
Â
The streak, however, would end at just that.
Â
The Black Knights' bats exploded in the second contest. Megan Muffett and Ally Snelling led the way with 3 RBIs each. Both of the senior captains were 2-for-3 at the dish.
Â
"I had a goal today to get on top the ball and get something up the middle," Muffett said. "I obviously struggled a little bit in the first game. She threw me some off-speed. But coming into the second game I was seeing the top half of the ball."
Â
The Cadets got on the board in the top of the first, with Snelling crossing the plate after Leila Hurst reached on an error. The Black Knights added to that lead in the third inning with Snelling scoring Angelina Bebek with an RBI single to left field. In the next at bat, Muffett scored Taylor Drayton from third with an RBI single.
Â
The senior tandem continued their damage at the plate in the fourth. Snelling knocked in Bebek and Kaci Donaldson in with a 2RBI single. Muffett crushed an opposite field homer over the right field fence to make the score 7-0.
Â
The Terriers added back two runs in the bottom half of the fourth. Then in the sixth, Caitlin Coker hit a two-run shot to cut Army's lead to three runs, but the Black Knights were able to contain them the rest of the way.
Â
"That win is a testament to the grit that this team has," Muffett said. "Just the fact that we're willing to take ownership of our positions on the field and make the most of the opportunities that we get, I think it says a lot about this team as a whole."
Â
Jolie Duong improved to 3-0 on the season, allowing two earned runs in 7.0 innings of work.
