Army Wraps Up Day 1 of PL Outdoor Championships

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's and women's track and field teams finished up their first day of competition in the Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday at Shea Stadium. There are six completed events on both sides and 16 remaining. The men sit in first place after day one and the women are eight points off the lead.

The men's team won five of the six events that went final.

August Cook won the javelin with a meet record throw of 75.2m. The mark ranks fifth overall in the nation this season and tops Cook's previous program record by over two meters.

Marshall Beatty placed first in the 10,000m with a time of 30:25.48, shedding 24.33 seconds off his personal best.

In both the hammer throw and long jump, the Black Knights owned three of the top four marks.

Marco Risi (60.33m) and Austin Herndon (58.05m) finished first and second in the hammer throw. Jamir Gibson placed fourth with a heave of 55.19m.

Josh Heiman placed first with a mark of 7.36m in the long jump. Kevin Kurth (7.07m) and Tyrese Bender (6.96m) took third and fourth respectively.

The Black Knights' 4x800m relay of Caden Foster, Peter Smith, Michael Altenburg and Luke Griner closed out the day on a high note, taking first in 7:40.08.

Ethan Hesson took second in the pole vault, clearing 4.93m.

The Black Knights went 1-2 in the hammer throw. Abigail Green took first place with a throw of 61.64m and Emily Mikoud finished close behind at 61.32m.

Freshman Lindsey Smith took first in the long jump with a personal best mark of 5.75m.

The Black Knights' 4x800m relay team of Quinn Collins, Shayla Bonzelet, Morgan Chewning-Kulick and Anna Tovkach took first with a time of 8:59.64. Tovkach, who was anchoring the relay, was in third place when she received the baton. The senior shot to first place within the first 200 meters and ended up running a 2:09.24 split.

Nicole Sacchinelli was the runner up in javelin with a throw of 47.08m, which topped her personal best by close to four meters. Brooke Stratman, a freshman, placed fourth with a mark of 46.27m.
