Black Knights Drop Contests with Colgate

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point softball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader against Colgate Monday afternoon at the Army Softball Complex. The Raiders took the first game 7-3 and then claimed the second contest 6-2.
The Raiders got on the board early in the first contest, owning a 4-0 lead through the top of the second.
Colgate added to its lead with a three-run top of the sixth to push ahead 7-0. The Black Knights got on the board with Kayla Edwards rounding the bases in the bottom half of the inning.
In the seventh inning Edwards hit a 2 RBI single to left field with two outs, which scored Taylor Drayton and Ellie Caldwell to make the score 7-3. Though, the Raiders were able to record the final out to win the first contest.
Edwards was 3-for-4 from the plate with two singles and a double. Yawaywish Laupsa-Briones also registered a multi-hit effort, going 2-for-3 from the dish.
Jolie Duong pitched the full game for the Cadets and was handed her first loss of the season. The Houston native is now 5-1 on the season and owns a 2.48 ERA.
The second contest was a pitcher's duel through the first five innings of play, as each team had just three hits.
The Raiders opened the scoring in the top of the sixth with a two-run homer with two outs.
The Black Knights countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to even things at 2-2. Ally Snelling hit an RBI single to right field, which scored Alicyn Grete from second base to cut the lead to one. In the next at bat, Annie Brock scored from third thanks to a beautiful bunt from Taylor Drayton.
Colgate, however, answered back the with a four-run seventh inning to earn the win.
Grete pitched all seven innings allowing three earned runs and striking out 10 batters.

Army returns to action on Saturday, May 1 and Sunday, May 2 when it plays host to Bucknell in a four-game weekend series.
