Black Knights Fall at Fordham, 3-2
April 13, 2021 | Baseball
BRONX, N.Y. – The Army West Point baseball team jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning, but were unable to hold on, falling 3-2 as the nine-game winning streak was snapped on Tuesday afternoon at Houlihan Park.
The Black Knights (12-12) out-hit the Rams, 7-5 but three unanswered runs for the Rams (16-7) with two in the fourth and one in the seventh proved to be too much to overcome.
In the third inning, the Black Knights took advantage of some miscues by the Rams, including two hit-by-pitches, a passed ball and a dropped fly to take a 1-0 lead as Tim Simoes was hit-by-the-pitch with the bases loaded to bring home the first run of the day. Anthony Giachin then delivered the second hit, a sac fly to make it 2-0, Black Knights.
Army starter Trevor Finan was cruising along, as he tossed three scoreless before getting into trouble in the fourth inning. The Rams tied things up as they scored two runs on three hits while also taking advantage of a Black Knights error.
Reliever Connley Early entered in the fifth and tossed a scoreless fifth and sixth before getting into trouble in the seventh. After back-to-back walks to lead things off and a sac bunt put two in scoring position, the Black Knights went to the bullpen for reliever Tanner Gresham. Gresham allowed a sac fly that was the go-ahead run, but minimized the damage.
However, down 3-2, the Black Knights were unable to mount a comeback in the eighth and ninth, as Rams' reliever Cameron Knox tossed a scoreless eighth and closer Joseph Quintal shut things down in the ninth.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Black Knights will head to Lehigh for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 17 before heading back to West Point for two on Sunday, April 18.
