March 06, 2021 | Men's Lacrosse
BOSTON, Mass. – The No. 6 Army West Point men's lacrosse team recorded their third-straight win and first conference victory of the year on Saturday afternoon in a fourth period battle with Boston University. Brendan Nichtern and Nickolas Edinger each tallied hat tricks and the defense stood tall in the final minutes to give the Black Knights a 12-10 edge over the Terriers.
HIGHLIGHTS:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Black Knights jumped out to an early 5-0 advantage in the first quarter with goals from five different players and Nichtern led the way with a goal and two assists in the opening 15 minutes. Boston University chipped away in the second quarter with Vince D'Alto scoring twice and Timmy Ley adding another. Army was silenced a bit after a big first quarter and was held to solo goals by Garofano and Edinger as the Black Knights took a 7-3 lead into the half.
The Terriers came out in the second half and cut the Army lead to 7-6 in the opening five minutes. Army remained cool and fired back with goals from Nichtern and Liam Davenport to regain a healthy lead for the Black Knights. The team traded goals in the last half of the frame and Army took a 10-7 advantage into the fourth.
The Army lead dwindled back down to one at 10-9 with back-to-back goals from Ley. Once again, however, the Black Knights were resilient and Edinger netted his hat trick with 11:57 on the clock to give Army an 11-9 lead with just under 12 minutes left in the game. The Terriers got back to within one with D'Alto scoring his third of the day with 9:54 on the clock to make it an 11-10 game.
After holding the Terriers scoreless for the next nine-plus minutes, Army put the game away with Abshire leaping in the air to catch the Nichtern pass behind the crease and finding the back of the net to give Army the 12-10 victory.
The Army defense was able to stifle the Terriers offense in the final 10 minutes of the game when the Black Knights were holding onto a one-goal lead. Wyatt Schupler was key to that effort, as was Marcus Hudgins, who finished the game with five caused turnovers. Schupler had 17 saves on 27 shots faced in net for Army.
UP NEXT: The Black Knights will return to home turf next weekend as they welcome Colgate University to Michie Stadium on Saturday, Mar. 13 at 1 p.m.
