WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's lacrosse team had three athletes named to the 2021 Tewaaraton Award Watch List on Thursday afternoon including Brendan Nichtern, Marcus Hudgins and Wyatt Schupler.
The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse players in the United States. The selection committees are made up of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the award.
All three athletes have been essential in leading the Black Knights to a 3-1 record and a No. 6 national rank heading into week 5.
Named the 2021 Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, Nichtern has since been named a 3x Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week while leading the Black Knights in both goals (13) and assists (12) for a team-high 25 points. The junior captain is currently tied for ninth nationally in assists per game (3) and points per game (6.25).
Hudgins and Schupler have been lights out on the defensive end of the field for Army, helping hold opponents' offenses at bay through the last three games. Schupler has been named a 2x Patriot League Goalie of the Week in addition to being named to the USILA DI Men's Lacrosse Team of the Week after the Black Knights big upset over Syracuse. The junior's .567 save percentage ranks 18th nationally and his 9.91 GAA ranks 21st. Hudgins recently grabbed his first weekly award of the year this week after recording a season-high five caused turnovers and five ground balls against Boston University. The junior defender was key in helping the Black Knights defense to stifle the Terriers offense in the final 10 minutes of the game when Army was only holding onto a one-goal lead. He is currently tied for 16th nationally in caused turnovers per game (2.5). Hudgins leads the Black Knights in caused turnover with 10 total and second in ground balls with 11.
"The recognition from the Tewaarton Foundation for Marcus, Wyatt and Brendan is well deserved," said head coach Joe Alberici. " All three have distinguished themselves and are amongst the nation's elite at their respective positions. They have been instrumental in our early season success and I know that they will continue to work to improve individually in order to make us all better."
