Army West Point Athletics
Black Knights Best Colgate, 3-0
February 21, 2021 | Volleyball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point volleyball team avenged its Friday loss to Colgate with a 3-0 victory over the Raiders in its home-opener at Gillis Field House on Sunday.
Â
"I'm so proud of this team for its toughness," Army head coach Alma Kovaci Lee said. "We only have one returner in Monica Eckford in the lineup on offense. Everyone else is brand new. We have a lot of freshmen out there and they played with so much maturity today."
Â
Eckford led the Cadets with 10 kills. Army freshmen Paige Fixemer and Savannah Bray each had seven kills, while Allanah Cutler added six. Senior setter Hannah Presley also contributed seven kills, one shy of her career high, and had 22 assists.
Â
Similar to Friday's matchup, Army won the first two sets. Though, this time around the Black Knights overcame the adversity in the third set. After Army jumped to an 18-10 lead, the Raiders managed to cut the Black Knights' lead to 21-20. Army dug in and managed to win the set 25-23.
Â
"It's tough when you go on the road and lose in five sets," Kovaci Lee said. "This is where character is built; when you have a tough loss and you can come back within 48 hours and beat that team 3-0."
Â
The Raiders were picked to finish second in the Patriot League preseason poll, finishing one spot above Army.
Â
"We knew we didn't want to feel how we did last time in the third set," Presley said. "So, if we just kept pushing one point at a time, we'd be able to focus and get all the way to 25."
Â
The Black Knights won the first set 25-19 with Presley leading the way with four kills and four assists. Army continued to roll in the second, winning 25-16 and posting a .361 kill percentage.
