Black Knights Fall on the Road to Holy Cross
March 12, 2021 | Volleyball
WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Army West Point volleyball team fell to Holy Cross 3-1 in a tight matchup Friday evening at Blaney Gymnasium. The largest margin of victory in the first three sets was three points.
Â
"Give credit to Holy Cross. They are a team with a lot of experience and they are a very good team," said Army head coach Alma Kovaci Lee.
Â
Freshman Paige Fixemer had a match-high 20 kills, while Cate Buckingham and Allanah Cutler contributed 13 and 12 respectively. Army had 58 kills in comparison to Holy Cross's 47. However, the Cadets had 32 errors, while the Crusaders had 20.
Â
"Paige was unstoppable," Kovaci Lee said. "She definitely doesn't play like a freshman – being a freshman doesn't bother her. I'm very proud of the way she played. Cate played really well and Allanah also did a good job."
Â
Army lead 19-12 in the first set, but the Crusaders came storming back to earn the narrow 25-23 victory.
Â
The second set was back-and-forth with neither team possessing more than a three-point lead. The score was knotted at 21-21, but Holy Cross scored four of the last five points to claim the set.
Â
The Black Knights faced match point twice in the third set, but managed to claw back to earn a victory in the third set. The Crusaders led 26-25, but the Cadets scored three consecutive points to take the set 28-26.
Â
Holy Cross was able to bounce back and take the fourth set 25-20 to secure the win.
Â
"Our team is definitely motivated to come back. We're looking forward to Sunday," Kovaci Lee added.
