Army Shuts Out Monmouth in First Home Victory

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point women's tennis team returned to Lichtenberg Tennis Center in dominant fashion Saturday morning, shutting out Monmouth University in a 7-0 contest.
Coming off two tough weekends against top ranked opponents in Boston College and Syracuse, the Black Knights switched up their momentum against the Hawks, picking up their first victory of the year on home turf.
"We were happy to be back at home competing again," said Head Coach Paul Peck. "The team trained hard in the fall and I think it will pay off in the spring season."
Army opened things up with a dominant performance in doubles play, taking three straight matchups to secure the team doubles point. The duos of Hannah Boubel/Sasha Inchauste and Justine Dondonay/Carolyn Ahn each took 6-2 contests from the Hawks, followed by a fight in the third slot with a 7-6 (5) matchup from Kitty Greenwalt and Anna Loureiro.
Once the Black Knights secured the doubles point, there was no turning back. Army jumped right into singles play, taking all six singles matches from Monmouth to secure a win on the day. McKinnley Smith started the victory spree in the No. 6 slot, taking a 6-0, 6-0 victory from Sydney DeNardo. Hannah Boubel followed the trend taking another shutout victory in the No. 1 slot from Ann Spurka to give the Black Knights a 3-0 lead roughly halfway through the afternoon. Freshman Carolyn Ahn grabbed her first singles victory in the No. 5 in an impressive 6-0, 6-1 performance, opening the door for Sasha Inchauste, Sophie McKenzie and Elizabeth Gilbert to take it home.
The Black Knights have a quick turnaround as they welcome UCONN to Lichtenberg tomorrow for a 2 p.m. match.
