Zhang, Alaimo Collect Weekly League Honors
October 12, 2021 | Men's Swimming and Diving
WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point swimming & diving team was featured in the Patriot League's first weekly honors of the 2021-22 season, as Evan Zhang and Daniel Alaimo were tabbed Men's Swimmer and Diver of the Week.
The duo picked up the accolades after helping the Black Knights (2-1) defeat Boston College this weekend by a dominant margin of 180-120. The victory was the team's second-straight, as Army was coming off a win over Binghamton when it made the trip to Chestnut Hill, Mass.
During the meet against the Eagles, Zhang picked up a pair of first-place finishes in both the 100/200 Breast and set Boston College's facility records in each event. He laid down a 55.48 in the 100-meter race before touching the wall with a time of 2:01.42 in the 200-meter event. Additionally, he helped the team capture the 200 Medley Relay (1:31.37) and swam to a third-place finish in the 200 IM (1:54.06). His efforts in the 200 IM helped the Cadets sweep the race, which was the meet's final individual event.
Alaimo has had a strong start to the season, picking up right where he left off in 2020-21. He earned a first-place finish in the 1m dive with a score of 331.35 before taking second in an additional 1m event after notching 319.35 points*. His score helped the team to sweep the event, as he finished between teammates David Manelis and Isaac Newman. Alaimo and Manelis additionally bested Boston College's facility record in the 1m event.
On the women's side, Melinda Zhang earned an honorable mention nod after picking up a slew of top finishes against both Rutgers and Boston College. In total, she won three individual events, tallied a third-place finish and helped the team achieve a second-place finish in the 400 Medley Relay while competing against the Scarlet Knights.
Army will enjoy a few weeks of practices before resuming its slate with a 10 a.m. meet at Seton Hall on Saturday, Oct. 23. It will be the first meeting on the men's side, though the women have a 2-0 all-time advantage over the Pirates.
