OLEAN, N.Y. - The Army West Point men's soccer team fell to the St. Bonaventure Bonnies, 4-2, in the team's last non-conference match on Tuesday. Army got a pair of early goals from Brandon Bryant and Oscar Pereira, but it was not enough to top the Bonnies.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In its second game in four days, Army went on the attack from the first touch, progressing the ball into the Bonnie half of the pitch and controlling the pace of play for the first five minutes of action. The Black Knights kept up its offensive pressure and score the first goal of the game off the right foot of Brandon Bryant. The freshman fired a strong shot that deflected that the Bonnie keeper could not control and put the Black Knights up a goal.
Just three minutes later, senior Oscar Pereira collected a pass from Bryant, settled the ball at the top of the 18 and fired a shot that ricocheted off a Bonnie defender and trickled into the bottom left corner of the net to put Army up a pair of goals just 11 minutes into action.
St. Bonaventure would put up a couple of goals in the remaining portion of first half to tie the score heading into halftime. Carter Kowalewski, Bradley Schweickert and Pereira all put shots on goal, but were not able to beat the keeper as the scored remained tied after 45 minutes.
The Bonnies struck first out of the halftime break, picking up a goal in the 48th minute to go up one score. Pereira and Atef Sikazwe both had opportunities on the following possessions but were both denied by the Bonnie keeper.
Army would keep on the attack, but came up just short, eventually falling to the Bonnies who would add a late goal to win, 4-2.
