WASHINGTON, D.C. – In its third game in seven days, the Army West Point men's soccer team battled the American Eagles in the nation's capital. The Cadets battled hard for a full 90 minutes, forcing an overtime period but could not find the golden goal before American, who won by a score of 2-1
HOW IT HAPPENED
In typical Black Knights fashion, the team got out to a fast start in the contest with the Eagles, as John Poncy broke through the American defense for an early chance. The Eagles lucked out, as Poncy's shots from the corner of the 18 missed just high.
Justin McStay had another opportunity for the Cadets in the 10' minute, as the junior put a good shot on net to test the American keeper who punched it away to keep Army off the board.
Army finally broke onto the scoreboard in the 22' minute courtesy of John Poncy, who beat the keeper to the low left corner of the net. Justin McStay created the opportunity for Poncy with a terrific run up the end-line and a pass to Poncy who one-touched it into the back of the net.
American would get the equalizer in the 25' minute off a corner kick set piece. The score would remain knotted at one heading into the second half.
The Eagles ramped up the offensive pressure in the second 45, but it was no issue for Suppiah, who recorded another save in the 58' and 86th minute to keep the Eagles offense at bay and keep the score tied going into overtime.
Oscar Pereira would create two more good scoring chances for Army but was unable to find the net as the score would stay 1-1 until the 90 minute mark.
American scored the golden goal in the 93'minute to secure the win and three points. The Cadets walk away with a point after the overtime loss.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jacob Suppiah stopped 3 shots in the contest and now has 30 saves on the season
- John Poncy scored his fourth goal of the season, which now puts him tied for second on the team
- Justin McStay registered his sixth point of the season with the assist on the Poncy goal
- The Army backline of D'Anthony Brown, Nick Atkinson, Jack Eaton and Luke Doyle turned in another impressive performance in front of Suppiah, allowing only five shots to reach the net
"American did a great job finishing two set pieces. We talk every day about how important set pieces are. We just need to be better in those moments. We talk about the first touch in the box and today we weren't great in that area,
I loved our work rate and connection within the group. We will stick together and keep moving forward and look forward to our next match Saturday against Holy Cross." - Army head men's soccer coach, Brian Plotkin
