Black Knights Continue Hot Streak With Win Over Sacred Heart
January 29, 2021 | Hockey
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point hockey team continued its string of strong play with a 2-1 victory over Atlantic Hockey foe Sacred Heart at Tate Rink on Friday night.
The win was the third consecutive victory for the Black Knights, who are unbeaten in regulation in their past seven contests.
"It took us a little while to get going, but it was another night where we got better as the game went along," Head Coach Brian Riley said. "We're learning how to win these games and closing out a win with a one goal lead is what it will take to be a good hockey team moving forward."
Goaltender Trevin Kozlowski has led the charge in net during Army's hot streak, as he claimed his fifth straight win. The senior stopped 16 of the 17 shots he faced in the game, highlighted by a glove save on a point-blank shot to preserve the Army lead with 15 seconds remaining.
After Army fell behind 1-0 in the first period, Colin Bilek evened the score with a shorthanded goal early in the second period. The junior has been one of the nation's top goal scorers thus far this season, as he has now scored 10 goals in his past eight games. Bilek now ranks third in college hockey in goals.
"Every guy on this team contributes and sometimes things just swing your way and that's what has been happening for me lately," Bilek said. "For me, runs like this are a lot more fun when you are winning games and we are doing that as a group right now."
Midway through the second, Daniel Haider and John Zimmerman broke free on a two-on-one, with Zimmerman firing home his first goal of the season to give Army the 2-1 advantage. Army clamped down the defense in the third, holding Sacred Heart to just our shots on goal in the final period to close out the victory.
"Obviously getting a win on Friday gives you confidence, but I think we showed ourselves last week what it takes to get the job done on both days of the weekend," Riley said. "We're going to head on the road tomorrow and face a tough team looking to bounce back, so we have to keep the intensity up and keep it going."
