Last Inning Rally Lifts WMU Over Army

Army was in control throughout the game, but the Broncos fought from behind with five runs in the ninth inning to seal a come from behind win.
Logan Smith delivered another strong performance on the mound for the Black Knights, leaving with a lead after 7.0 innings.
Army was strong offensively in the contest, as they produced 12 hits. Four different Cadets delivered multi-hit games, including Andrew Walden who also added three runs scored and three stolen bases on the day. Freshman Ross Friedrick recorded his first career hit, a two-run single up the middle in the fifth inning.
But the ninth inning told the story of this one, as the Broncos scored five runs on the Army bullpen before closing the game out in the bottom half.
The Black Knights will look to bounce back when they take on UIC on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
HIGHLIGHTS AND NOTES:
- Western Michigan struck first in the top half of the first. After a leadoff double, Justin McIntyre came around to score on a sacrifice fly to put WMU up 1-0.
- Logan Smith settled in after the inning, getting through the fifth inning without allowing another hit.
- Army pulled even in the fourth when Jeremiah Adams brought home Andre Walden with an RBI single.
- The Cadets would take the lead an inning later. After Anfernee Cropton singled and Kevin Dubrule walked to open the inning. Carter Macias would bring Cropton home with on a groundout to short to give Army a 2-1 lead.
- The Black Knights extended their lead in the seventh. After singles from Anthony Giachin and Andre Walden started the inning, freshman Ross Friedrick collected his first collegiate hit with a two-run single up the middle to make it 4-1 Army.
- The Broncos would fight closer in the seventh, scoring twice to cut the Army lead to 4-3.
- They would threaten again in the seventh, but Harry Flannery Jr. came on to get two big outs with runners on first and second to preserve the Army lead.
- Army got the runs back in the eighth. Andre Walden scored on a balk and Kevin Dubrule singled to left to plate another run to extend Army's lead to 6-3.
- WMU stormed ahead in the ninth, scoring five runs, four of which were unearned, to win the game 8-6.
UP NEXT: Army will take on UIC on Saturday at North Charlotte Regional Park. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
