Foster Earns 100th Win at Army

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Army head coach Jim Foster earned his 100th victory with the program as the Black Knights defeated Campbell 5-4 to conclude the Armed Forces Invitational on Sunday.
The teams traded leads throughout, with the Black Knights eventually gaining the upper hand with two runs in the seventh. The Army bullpen was key in the contest, going 4.2 innings without allowing an earned run.
Andre Walden was Army's lead producer at the plate, going 4-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. The junior was involved in four of the team's five runs, breaking a tie to give the Cadets the lead on two separate occasions.
Sophomore Ben DeLaubell kept Campbell off the board for three innings in relief to earn his first career victory. Will Hart capped off the win with four big outs to earn his first career save.
The Black Knights went 2-2 in the weekend series, splitting games with both Campbell and Air Force. Army will head to Port Charlotte, Fla., for the Snowbird Classic next weekend. Play will begin on Friday March 6 when Army takes on Western Michigan at 11 a.m.
HIGHLIGHTS AND NOTES:
- Campbell got on the board first on a Matthew Christian RBI double to left in the bottom half of the first.
- Army got the run back in the second. Andre Walden led the inning off with a single and then stole second. He later came around to score on a groundout tie the game at 1-1.
- The Cadets took the lead in the third on a Walden's second hit. He grounded a single through the left side and the ball was misplayed in the outfield by Campbell. Tim Simoes came all the way around the bases from first base to score.
- The Camels evened the score in the bottom of the inning on a squeeze by Collin Wolf.
- Walden broke the tie again in the fifth, sending a double down the left field line to put Army up 3-2.
- Campbell returned the favor in the bottom of the inning, scoring twice to take a 4-3.
- Army was set up in the seventh with the bases loaded and no outs. Cam Cerruto walked in the tying run and then Army took the lead on an Anfernee Crompton sacrifice fly to make give the Black Knights a 5-4 lead.
- In the bottom of the inning, Zach Williams lined a single to left with a runner on second. Andre Walden fired in to Kevin Dubrule who delivered a strike to home to beat the runner and preserve the Army lead.
- Will Hart entered with a runner on second and two outs in the eighth. The freshman lefthander recorded the final four outs of the game to earn his first career save in Army's 5-4 win.
- Ben DeLaubell went 3.0 scoreless innings in relief to earn his first career victory.
- The win was Head Coach Jim Foster's 100th career victory at Army.
- It also marks the 100th victory for Army's class of 2020. Seniors Anfernee Crompton, Jacob Hurtubise, John McKenna, Joe Santoro, Logan Smith, and Drake Titus were a part of Coach Foster's first freshmen class at West Point.
UP NEXT: Army will travel to Port Charlotte, Fla., for the Snowbird Classic. The Black Knights will take on Western Michigan on March 6 at 11 a.m.
