Softball Outlasts Hawaii; Falls to LIU

Army started its day off with a dramatic, 7-6, win over Hawaii to extend its winning streak to four games. The streak came to end in the next game, as the Black Knights fell to LIU, 10-2, in five innings.
GAME 1: ARMY 7, HAWAII 6
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Taylor Drayton hit her second home run of the season, which ties her with Ally Snelling for the team's lead. It also marked the 10th homer of her career.
- Drayton's two RBIs improver her season total to eight, which is also tied with Snelling for the most on the team.
- Jolie Duong picked up the win in the circle after coming in for Emily Iannotti in the fourth inning. Duong pitched a total of 3.2 innings, allowing just one earned run.
- Six different members of the Black Knights rounded the bases, with Drayton being the lone member to score twice.
- This was Army's seventh consecutive game scoring at least five runs in a game, dating back to last season's final against St. Peter's.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Black Knights were the first team to get on the board after Taylor Drayton blasted a two-run homer over the left field fence in the bottom of the first.
- Hawaii would later tie things up in the top of the third, thanks to a two-run shot from Maya Nakamura.
- The Cadets, however responded with a five-run bottom of the third to push ahead 7-2.
- Drayton came around to score on a single out to right field from Madi Gilmore to make the score 3-2. Then, Gilmore and Snelling scored to give the Cadets the 5-2 lead.
- Later in the bottom of the third, Muffett roped an RBI double out to the fence, which scored Ballesteros, and moved Brook Mitchell to third base. Mitchell scored on the next at bat with Snyder bringing her home to extend Army's lead to 7-2.
- The Warriors would not go down easily. Angelique Ramos led off the fourth inning with a solo homerun over the left field fence to cut Army's lead to 7-3. Two batters later Ka'ena Kelinoi sent a two-run homer out of the park to make it a two-run game.
- In the top of the fifth, Callee Heen sent a home run out to right field to make the score 7-6.
- Though Duong and the Black Knights would go on to record eight straight outs to pick up their fourth consecutive win.
GAME 2: LIU 10, ARMY 2 (5)
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Gilmore, Snelling and Alicyn Grete each had multi-hit games.
- Gilmore has now had three multi-hit games this season. Dating back to the 2019 season, she has a nine-game hit streak.
- This was Snelling's fourth multi-hit contest of the season. The junior from Las Vegas, Nev., has record at least a base knock in all seven games this season.
- Grete's two hits represents her first career multi-hit game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Sharks jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to an RBI single from Alina Castillo. Though, Army got a run back in the bottom half of the inning with Drayton scoring on a sacrifice fly from Snelling.
- LIU was able to pull ahead after a seven-run third inning, which pushed them ahead, 8-1. The sharks then tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning to make the score 10-1.
- Army loaded the bases with just one out in the bottom of the fifth. Gilmore came around to score after Sage Peters was hit by a pitch. Though, the Sharks were able to record consecutive outs to secure the win.
UP NEXT
The Black Knights return to action for day two at the Golden State Classic on Saturday. Army's will play Bradley at 12:30 p.m. ET and then Portland State at 3 p.m. PT.
