The Black Knights are coming off a strong team performance against the Coast Guard Academy where they found wins in 21 of 23 total individual matches, while this will be the first and only competition for the Falcons this year. Army and Air Force have a storied past including 16 contests dating back to 1970. The Falcons currently hold a 9-7 advantage over the Black Knights in dual competition.
The last time these two teams met was at the end of February, when the Black Knights traveled to California for a double header with the Falcons and the USC Trojans. Despite an early win for Army in the No.1 doubles slot, the Falcons secured the doubles point in the following two matchups. The Black Knights followed suit in singles play with an early 6-0, 6-0 win by A.J. Woodman but could not gain enough momentum to win the majority. The match came down to David Gorshein in the No. 3 singles, which rallied to a tough three set 6-4 loss, clinching the win for the Falcons, 4-2.
"Our team is really excited to be competing again this weekend against Air Force," said head coach Jim Poling. "We lost to them in a very close match last spring so we know they are a tough. This weekend, we will be trying out a new flighted format where every Army player is placed in one of several flights. This allows them the opportunity to play three singles matches against the Air Force players. It will be great and although unfortunately we can't have any fans at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center, be sure tune in to our live steam for some fantastic tennis!"
Â
Athletes from both sides have complied with their institutions'Â and conferences' respective COVID-19 testing guidelines ahead of the competition. The match will be closed to outside spectators but will have a live video stream of the match.
