Black Knights Head to Annapolis for Army-Navy Star Meet
October 16, 2020 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Army West Point cross country teams are set to begin their championship seasons when they head to Annapolis to take on service academy rival Navy at the Army-Navy Star Meet on Saturday, Oct. 17. The meet will be the third for the Black Knights of the shortened 2020 season after strong performances against Syracuse and Boston College in September. Army and Navy have split the meet the past two seasons, with Army taking the women's meet in 2019 and the men's meet in 2018. The event will mark the first competition of the 2020-21 Army-Navy Star Series presented by USAA.Â
The day will start with the women's race at 10 a.m., where Army will look to claim its second consecutive Star Meet victory over the Midshipmen. The Black Knights claimed the 2019 race in dramatic fashion, clipping their rival 27-28 at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls, N.Y. Army has been led by two standout freshmen thus far in 2020, as Georgia Jones and Helen Shearer were the team's top two finishers in each of its meets. Army defeated Syracuse, which entered the season ranked fourth in the ACC's preseason poll, by a score of 26-33 in the season opener in Montgomery, N.Y. Navy returns its top two finishers from the 2019 meet in senior Emily Craig and sophomore Elizabeth Sullivan.Â
The three-time defending Patriot League Champion Army men's team will take on Navy at 11 a.m., looking to bounce back from a narrow loss to Navy one season ago. The past two winners of the league's rookie of the meet award in junior Marshall Beatty and sophomore Garrett Gough have been the team's top performers thus far in 2020, with Beatty finishing third at the Three Team Battle in Beantown against Syracuse and Boston College. Like Army, who graduated one of the most decorated senior classes in program history, Navy enters 2020 with several new faces at the front of the pack after 2020 graduates Jake Brophy and Kevin Murray finished first and third respectively at the Patriot League Championships. Senior captain Julian Perez led Navy to victory with a first place finish in the team's season-opening win over Pittsburgh.Â
