Army Slated Second in Patriot League Preseason Poll

Nichtern, Manown and Rigney named to Preseason Team
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - With the season right around the corner, the Army West Point men's lacrosse team was picked to finish second in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, announced by the league on Monday.Â
Right off a 2019 Patriot League Championship, the Black Knights shared equal points with Loyola in the poll at 111, but received seven first-place votes to their eight which placed them second. Lehigh follows with 99 points and three first-place votes and Boston U. (76) and Navy (59) round out the top-five.Â
Brendan Nichtern, Matt Manown and Tom Rigney were all named to the Preseason All-Patriot League team.Â
Nichtern returns as the team's top attacker after leading the squad with 80 points in his freshman campaign setting multiple records along the way. He was named All-America Honorable Mention last season and was a member of the Second Team All-Patriot League team.Â
Manown was the team's top midfielder in 2019 with 33 points on 19 goals and 14 assists. The captain also notched 12 multi-point games to earn second team honors last season.Â
A key player in the Black Knights' transition game, Rigney produced a personal best 51 ground balls averaging 2.83 per game.
The No. 15/20 Black Knights make their 2020 debut at Michie Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 8. The game will be against No. 14 UMass. Also recognized in the preseason rankings on Army's schedule are No. 6 Notre Dame, No. 7 Syracuse, No. 15 Loyola, No. 16 Rutgers and No. 18 Lehigh.Â
