May 07, 2019 | Hockey
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Senior captain Dalton MacAfee of the Army West Point hockey team was among the recipients of the Mike Krzyzewski Award for Excellence in Teaching Character Through Sport on Monday.
Â
The winners were announced at the Cadet Mess Hall during the 13th annual luncheon where Coach K recognizes West Point athletes and coaches for their outstanding commitment to the development of noble character through athletic participation and leadership. Krzyzewski, a 1969 USMA graduate and former basketball player and coach, presented the awards, a certificate and medal.
Â
The awards recognize West Point athletes and coaches for their outstanding commitment to the development of noble character through athletic participation and leadership. The cadet recipient exemplifies the Army values of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage both on-and-off the "fields of friendly strife."
Â
Dubbed the "Coach K" awards, MacAfee was recognized for not only his athletic success but also for his commitment to excellence and respect for his teammates, opponents, and the sport.
Â
"We are very proud of Dalton," said head coach Brian Riley. "He possesses all the qualities of a great leader - he is accountable, a team-first guy and the ultimate selfless leader. He is a very worthy recipient of this prestigious award and someone all can look up to."
Â
MacAfee rarely left the ice as he was a staple on the power play and penalty kill while leading the nation in power play points, but always found time after each and every game to interact with fans of all ages on and off the ice.
Â
His positive outlook and influence on the team enabled them to keep fighting even during the mid-season stretch. The senior kept the team's season alive and the Cadets were one win away from playing in Atlantic Hockey Championship Weekend.Â
