WEST POINT, N.Y. – Senior defender Johnny Surdick and senior goalie AJ Barretto garnered All-America honors by the Inside Lacrosse Media, announced during the NCAA First Round on Sunday.
Media All-Americans are voted on by members of the media who vote in the weekly Inside Lacrosse Media Poll.
"This is a tremendous recognition for two standout four-year players in the Army Lacrosse Family," said head coach Joe Alberici. "Johnny and AJ have impacted our program since the day they stepped onto Academy grounds and they were at their very best this year, often shinning brightest in our biggest moments.
"Johnny's ability to neutralize our opponents biggest threat as well his talent in ground ball play was the cornerstone for our top ranked defense. AJ was absolutely tremendous this season. His consistency in the cage and in our clearing game more so than any other single factors were the reason for our on field success. More important than any of their physical attributes was the leadership they provided our family on and off the field. They are two great young men and are so deserving of this prestigious recognition."
Surdick, the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, earned first team recognition for the first time in his career. As a junior, Surdick was voted to the second team.
The senior captain had a tremendous impact on Army's success this season. Surdick led the team in ground balls (64) and caused turnovers (36). The next best on the team in caused turnovers totals 15. The Odenton, Md., native boasts 176-career ground balls and 103 caused turnovers.
Barretto had his best season in cage for Army with a 13-5 record. The Patriot League Tournament MVP finished the year with the second-best goals against average in the NCAA at 8.58. Barretto totaled 201 saves during his senior campaign and a .576 save percentage to rank sixth nationally.
The Darlington, Md., native finished his career with 572 saves which slates him fourth in the Black Knights' record books. His 13 wins in a single-season was a program record for the Black Knights as well. This is Barretto's first Inside Lacrosse Media All-America honor in his career.
