BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Juniors Ben Harvey and Cael McCormick of the Army West Point wrestling team collected the EIWA Academic Achievement Award when the conference released the list on Tuesday.
Harvey earned his third academic honor from the conference, while McCormick was named for the first time. In order to be eligible for the award, the student-athletes needed to achieve a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 and participate in the EIWA Championships or achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and qualify for the NCAA Championships through the EIWA.
Harvey and McCormick were two of the 85 wrestlers recognized by the conference. American, Brown, Drexel and Lehigh led the way with eight representatives each, while all 16 teams earned multiple award winners.
"Both of these men represent the work ethic and commitment to excellent that our program stands for," head coach Kevin Ward said. "Both are ranked top-20 nationally and excel in the classroom. That kind of success doesn't happen by accident, but is the result of their discipline, ability to focus on their priorities and their commitment to chasing greatness in all they do."
Harvey boasts a 3.72 grade-point average as a Political Science major. The New Palestine, Ind., native posted his best season at West Point in 2018-19, setting new personal bests in wins (30), dual wins (9) and bonus point wins (10). He placed fifth at the EIWA Championships in Binghamton before posting a 2-2 finish in his second appearance at the national tournament in Pittsburgh. Harvey became Army's first quarterfinalist since Matt Kyler in 2010 after defeating two-time All-American and sixth-ranked David McFadden of Virginia Tech. He advanced to the round of 12 for the second consecutive year, one-win shy of being an All-American.
McCormick owns a 3.71 GPA as a Systems Engineering major. The Yorktown, Ind., native capitalized on his first season as a starter for the Black Knights, posting a 19-10 record while going 8-3 in duals. He added seven bonus point wins on four pins, a technical fall and two major decisions. He continued to impress in the postseason, starting with a runner-up finish in his debut at the EIWA Championships. McCormick upset No. 9 Demetrius Romero of Utah Valley in the first round of the NCAA Championships with a pin at 2:27, the sixth-fasted pin at the national tournament in program history. Additionally, he became just the ninth Cadet to record a pin in his debut at the NCAAs and first since John Paxton in 2003.
