Home Runs Spark Doubleheader Sweep for Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point baseball team took both games of a doubleheader with Manhattan here Wednesday afternoon.
The Black Knights defeated the Jaspers 12-6 in Game 1 before earning a 4-1 victory in the nightcap. Both contests were limited to seven innings.
Six cadet-athletes posted at least two hits in the twin bill with Trey Martin, John McKenna and Jeremiah Adams leading the way with three hits each.
Martin added a team-best six runs batted in, including his first career grand slam. Drake Titus chipped in three RBI, while Tim Simoes reeled in two.
Starting pitchers Mike Gagliardi and Anthony LoRicco both registered their first wins of the season. Gagliardi allowed five hits and two runs in 3.0 innings during the opener. LoRicco then followed suit giving up just three hits, one run and one walk in 4.0 innings of Game 2. The two combined to strike out nine batters.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Martin drilled two home runs on the day, one in each contest, shifting his season number to a team-best five.
- Carter Macias also tallied a long ball in the nightcap for his first career blast.
- In the games, Army finished with six doubles, one triple and three home runs, compared to five total extra base hits for the Jaspers.
- Logan Smith, Ray Bartoli, Brock Daugherty, and Ben DeLaubell each got work in for the Black Knights in relief.
- Smith and Bartoli both logged three innings, allowing just two hits.
- As a pitching staff, the Cadets totaled 20 strikeouts to only 11 for the Jaspers.
- Jacob Hurtubise notched a team-high three walks, and went a perfect 4-for-4 on stolen bases. The junior now has 29 on the year to lead the conference.
How It Happened - Game 1
- The Black Knights started the scoring early with four big runs on four hits in the opening frame. Andre Walden started things off with a one-out double to left center. He shifted himself to third during the next at bat following a stolen base. An RBI-groundout by Anthony Giachin scored him on the ensuing play to hand the Black Knights a 1-0 edge. The next three Army batters earned a single and two walks to load the bases for Adams. The junior then singled through the left side to bring home two more runs for the Cadets. Titus kept the wheel moving with another RBI-single to score Army's final run of the frame.
- The home side added another score in the second thanks to a one-out wild pitch. Hurtubise singled to center field to lead off the frame. The junior stole second before reaching third thanks to a throwing error on the same play. After the Jaspers' notched the first out of the inning, Hurtubise touched home following that wild pitch to make it a 5-0 ballgame.
- Manhattan cut into the lead in the top of the third after a two-out, two-run home run to right center.
- The Black Knights quickly answered in the bottom half after Titus doubled in Adams and McKenna from first and second, respectively. Titus then crossed home plate on the next at bat following an RBI-groundout by Simoes to increase the Cadets' edge to 8-2.
- Army added to its advantage in the fifth when Martin drilled a shot over the left field fence to register his first career grand slam. His two-out hit brought home Hurtubise, Macias and Giachin to extend the Black Knights' lead to 12-2.
- The Jaspers tried to rally in the top of the seventh and even managed to score four runs on four hits but the deficit proved to be too much.
How It Happened - Game 2
- Manhattan jumped in front 1-0 after the opening frame following a one-out double down the right field line. That hit scored Sam Franco who led off the game with a single up the middle.
- The Cadets tied the contest in the second thanks to back-to-back extra base hits from Adams and Simoes. After the Jaspers notched the first out of the frame Adams drilled a triple to left center to place a runner in scoring position. Simoes then doubled to left field to easily score the junior and knot the game at 1-1.
- Army pulled in front at 3-1 in the third when Martin went yard for the second time on the day. His two-out, two-RBI hit over the center field fence scored Macias, who had singled two batters prior.
- Macias then got in on the home run action when he drilled a solo shot over the right field fence in the fifth inning.
FACTS & FIGURES
- Army finished with 16 runs on 18 hits, while Manhattan posted seven runs on 16 hits.
- Each team was tagged with an error on the day with the Black Knights earning one and the Jaspers recording two.
- The Cadets left 15 runners on base. Manhattan stranded 13.
UP NEXT
- Army will host Patriot League foe Lafayette this weekend for a three-game series.
- The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game Sunday. First pitch for both days is 12 p.m.
- Saturday will mark senior day for nine special seniors. A pregame ceremony will begin at 11:45 a.m.
