It’s a Senior Day Sweep for Army Baseball

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point baseball team defeated Lafayette in a doubleheader here Saturday for two wins on senior day.
The Black Knights earned a 4-2, seven-inning win in Game 1, before notching a 10-2 victory in the nightcap. With the day's outcomes, Army increases its winning streak to six straight.
Prior to the opener, nine seniors were acknowledged for their dedication to the team over the last four years. Daniel Burggraaf, Jacob Carte, Mike Gagliardi, Tyler Giovinco, Matt Hudgins, Trey Martin, Sam Messina, Cam Opp and Josh White were the cadet-athletes honored Saturday.
Giovinco and Burggraaf both registered wins on the day, with Opp earning his team-leading third save. Giovinco got the starting nod in Game 1, allowing seven hits and two runs in 6.0 innings. Burggraaf shut the Leopards down in the nightcap, giving up just four hits, one run and three walks in 5.2 innings. The two combined to strike out 10 batters during their time on the hill.
John McKenna, Andre Walden, and Martin led the team with three hits each in the twin bill. Tim Simoes recorded a team-best three runs batted in, while five different Cadets notched two runs each.
The Class of 2019 is now one win away from reaching 100 wins in their Army careers.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- The Black Knights are now 8-4 in Patriot League play.
- Army's six-game winning streak is its longest of the year.
- The Cadets posted four extra base hits to three for the Leopards.
- Jeremiah Adams drilled his second career long ball in a Black and Gold uniform during Game 2.
- McKenna was one home run short of hitting for the cycle as he registered a single, double, and triple in the nightcap.
- Also in Game 2, Walden earned his first triple of the season.
- McKenna and Martin chipped in two RBI on the day.
- Drake Titus and Walden both registered a stolen base.
- Each team turned two double plays.
- Opp posted a clean sheet during his one inning on the mound.
- Harry Flannery Jr. and Carte each saw action in the second game. Flannery allowed two hits and one unearned run in 2.1 innings, while Carte retired the side down in order during his one inning.
- Both pitching staffs notched 14 strikeouts on the day.
How It Happened - Game 1
- The Cadets put up two runs in the first on three hits to take an early 2-0 lead. Blake Ledoux converted on a sacrifice fly to score Jacob Hurtubise before Walden touched home during the next at bat.
- The Leopards cut the lead in half in the top of the second when Spencer Rouse launched a lead-off shot over the left field fence.
- Army quickly answered in the bottom half after a groundout by Titus scored White, who had led off the inning with a walk.
- Again, Lafayette saw Rouse drill a leadoff solo home run to left field in the fourth to make it a 3-2 ballgame.
- Fortunately for the home side they earned that run back in the bottom half when Titus singled through the right side to score Martin.
- Giovinco then allowed just one hit throughout the next seven batters he faced to set up Opp's save opportunity in the seventh.
- The senior then sat the Leopards down in order to secure the win.
How It Happened - Game 2
- Lafayette opened the scoring in the third when a two-out single by Richard Villa scored Justin Johnson from second.
- The Black Knights responded with a two-out rally of their own after they used six hits to score four runs to break the game open at 6-1. Martin, McKenna and Simoes each posted two RBI during the frame.
- The Cadets added three more runs over the next two innings to take a 9-1 lead into the seventh.
- Lafayette tallied one unearned run back in the top of the seventh following a fielding error.
- Adams closed out Army's scoring in the bottom half when he went yard over the left field fence to leadoff the frame.
FACTS & FIGURES
- The Black Knights registered 14 runs on 17 hits, while Lafayette notched four runs on 13 hits.
- Each team recorded three errors on the day.
- Army stranded nine runners on base. Lafayette left 15.

- These two teams will face off one last time on Sunday to wrap up this three-game weekend series.
