Jones, Surdick Highlight Senior CLASS Award List
March 05, 2019 | Men's Lacrosse
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Nate Jones and Johnny Surdick, two captains of the Army West Point men's lacrosse team, join thirty of the top NCAA men's lacrosse student-athletes who excel both on and off the field and were selected as candidates for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate lacrosse.
Â
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.Â
Â
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.Â
"Nate Jones has been in a unique position for us as a four-year starter which is unusual in our program," said head men's lacrosse coach Joe Alberici. "It has been great to see him mature from a young man who always worked hard and was concerned about developing his own game into the senior captain where he has been immersed in helping develop our team. He is consistently working on ways to better all of us and that is what that institution is about – giving a pathway for guys to be a great leader and that is clearly what Nate has done in our program. Nate has always been invested in the military side of things and has been a great company mate, teammate and mentor."
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists later in the season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
"Johnny Surdick has had a major impact in our program," said Alberici. "He is as gifted a defensive player as there is in the country, but more importantly he is a leader by example. Johnny is a tremendous quality human being who comes from a great family. His work ethic and mentorship of our younger players and ability to pull guys aside to point them in the right direction is something we are going to rely heavily on as one of our captains this year."
Â
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced in conjunction with the 2019 NCAA Men's Lacrosse National Championship in May.
