March 29, 2019 | Men's Lacrosse
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Senior captain Johnny Surdick of the Army West Point men's lacrosse team was selected as one of the top-10 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award.
Â
Fan voting has begun at www.seniorCLASSaward.com. Fans will be able to vote online through May 20.
Â
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Â
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Â
The finalists were chosen by national media from the list of 30 candidates announced earlier this month. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner, and fans are encouraged to submit votes online at the Senior CLASS Award website through May 20. Fan votes will be combined with those of the media and Division I head coaches to determine the winners. The Senior CLASS Award recipient will be announced during the 2019 NCAA Men's Lacrosse National Championship® in May.
"Johnny Surdick has had a major impact in our program," said head coach Joe Alberici. "He is as gifted a defensive player as there is in the country, but more importantly he is a leader by example. Johnny is a tremendous quality human being who comes from a great family. His work ethic and mentorship of our younger players and ability to pull guys aside to point them in the right direction is something we are going to rely heavily on as one of our captains this year."
Â
Army has had two previous winners of the Senior CLASS Award. Andrew Maisano (2010) and Brendan Buckley (2013) are the only two to be presented the Senior CLASS Award in the Patriot League.
Â
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced in conjunction with the 2019 NCAA Men's Lacrosse National Championship in May.
