Army’s High Tempo Offense Breezes Past Colgate

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The 18th-ranked Army West Point men's lacrosse team topped Colgate 13-8 Saturday thanks to its high tempo offense.
Ten of the Black Knights' 13 goals were assisted to give Army 23 points on the day. Five players recorded double-digit goals in the victory, while seven garnered multiple points in the performance.
Brendan Nichtern netted a goal and dished out a career-tying four assists in the effort while picking up a career-high eight ground balls.
Tommy Marino posted a career-high two goals in the game as Sean O'Brien, Miles Silva, Matt Manown and Nate Jones were also in the double-digit goal category.
AJ Barretto made eight stops versus the Raiders and Johnny Surdick and Jordan Cole led the team with three caused turnovers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- For the ninth time this season, the Black Knights were the first team to strike.
- Manown fed a short pass into the slot where Miles Silva was waiting for the score to put Army ahead 1-0.
- Less than a minute later, Alex Alacqua passed across the offensive zone to Jeremy Angle who fired a shot and goal from the right side.
- The Raiders scored three straight however to claim a 3-2 lead to start the second quarter.
- Nichtern connected with Jones at the 12:30 mark to tie things up at 3-3, but Colgate scored again to take its final lead of the game.
- A 3-0 run by the Cadets allowed them to take control of the game.
- Nichtern garnered a ground ball behind the net and scored on a wide lefty crease roll before assisting on the next two goals in the streak. O'Brien and Jones were the goal scorers.
- Colgate broke the run by scoring a man-up goal, but Army answered back with a man-up goal of its own.
- Marino netted his first of the game with 7:22 on the clock in the third quarter.
- Jones fed across the crease where Marino was able to find the back of the net.
- With 2:11 to go in the quarter, Manown utilized a quick restart at the top of the Army box and ran the ball in for a score during a personnel change by both teams. This gave the Black Knights an 8-5 advantage.
- He scored the first Cadet goal in the fourth quarter off an assist from Nicholas Garofano.
- The Raiders converted another man-advantage goal before Nichtern's shovel pass to O'Brien in the middle set up a goal for the Black Knights.
- Colgate scored yet again on man-up, but so did Marino.
- Alacqua was on the assist for the second goal as Marino faked out the Raiders' goalie for Army's 11th goal of the game.
- The Black Knights bookended a Raiders score to close out the game with the score 13-8 in favor of Army.
- Silva and O'Brien were credited with the final goals of the game.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Surdick surpassed the 150-career ground ball mark in today's game.
- The senior captain now boasts 152 in his four years after his five today.
- Nichtern led the way offensively with five points.
- O'Brien had a career performance in goals (3) and points (4).
- Manown, Marino, Jones and Silva all posted two goals apiece.
- Jones finished the day with three points and Manown had three.
- Jones' career total for goals resides at 97 which ranks him 11th all-time at Army.
- Angle had a lone goal in the effort and Garofano notched a solo helper.
- After earning his first career assist earlier this season against Syracuse, Alacqua registered a career-high two against the Raiders.
- Barretto recorded eight saves and now totals 485 in his four-year career.
- He continues to climb in the Army record books and currently resides at eighth.
- Cole had a career-high three caused turnovers today alongside Surdick who also had three.
- Anthony George posted two in the effort which was also a career-high.
- Nichtern's eight ground balls blew away his previous high of three.
- Surdick followed with five and George and Evan Condon produced a trio each.
