Houston Walks Off Against Army In Comeback Win
March 10, 2019 | Baseball
HOUSTON, Texas - The Army West Point baseball team watched its host Houston record a 9-7 walk-off win here Sunday afternoon.
The Cougars trailed 7-3 heading into the seventh but notched four key runs during the frame to knot the score at 7-7. Two innings later Joe Davis drilled a shot over the right field fence to secure the comeback win.Â
The Black Knights were led by John McKenna and Anthony Giachin who posted three and two hits each, respectively. McKenna registered two RBI and a run, while Giachin accounted for a team-high two runs.
Jeremiah Adams also had a multi-RBI day, bringing home three of Army's final seven runs.Â
Starter Daniel Burggraaf finished with the no decision after allowing seven hits, five runs, four of which were earned, in 6.1 innings of work. The righty recorded a season-best nine strikeouts during his time on the hill.

How It Happened
- The Black Knights jumped in front early with four big runs in the opening frame. Hurtubise and Titus recorded back-to-back walks before Giachin loaded the bases with a single to first base. McKenna followed suit with a single to left field to score Army's first run of the inning. After the Cougars notched the first out of the game Walden reached on a fielding error which allowed two more runs to come home. Houston then made a pitching change before Adams closed out the scoring with an RBI-sacrifice bunt.
- The home side grabbed one unearned run back in the bottom half of the first to cut the deficit to 4-1.
- Army then increased its lead back to four runs in the top of the third when McKenna again came up with a timely hit. Giachin singled to right center to start the frame before McKenna drilled an RBI-double to score him from first.Â
- Houston would not go away though, recording two runs on three hits in the bottom half to pull within 5-3.
- The Black Knights extended their lead to 7-3 in the top of the sixth when Adams went yard to score two big Army runs.Â
- Unfortunately, the home team registered four runs on three hits and an error to knot the score at 7-7. After the Cougars scored on an RBI-single to center field they proceeded to loaded the bases with one out. During the next at bat, a bloop single play scored three more runs to tie things up.
- Houston worked its way out of a small jam in the top of the ninth when Army loaded the bases with one out. The home side was able to get themselves out of the inning without conceding the go-ahead run.
- In the bottom half, the Cougars sparked a one-out rally after Jared Triolo singled through the left side. He advanced to second during the ensuing at bat after a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt. A few pitches later Houston registered the game-winning hit over the left field fence.
