March 01, 2019 | Men's Lacrosse
NEW YORK – Senior captain Johnny Surdick of the Army West Point men's lacrosse team was named to the 2019 Tewaaraton Award Watch List on Thursday.
It is the second straight year that the defender makes the list, which is made up of the top players across all three divisions of NCAA lacrosse.
The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse players in the United States. The selection committees are made up of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation.
ABOUT THE TEWAARATON FOUNDATION
Founded at the University Club of Washington, DC and first presented in 2001, the Tewaaraton Award is recognized as the preeminent lacrosse award, annually honoring the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. Endorsed by the Mohawk Nation Council of Elders and U.S. Lacrosse, the Tewaaraton Award symbolizes lacrosse's centuries-old roots in Native American heritage. The Tewaaraton Foundation ensures the integrity and advances the mission of this award. Each year, the Tewaaraton Award celebrates one of the six tribal nations of the Iroquois Confederacy – the Mohawk, Cayuga, Oneida, Onondaga, Seneca and Tuscarora – and presents two scholarships to students of Native American descent. Surdick returns to the list and is Army's top defender for the third straight season. He has played a key role in the Black Knights' early season success, which included a pair of upset wins over nationally-ranked UMass and Rutgers.
The Odenton, Md., native boasts 10 caused turnovers and 18 ground balls through Army's first four games. His 2.50 caused turnovers per game ranks 11th in the country.
