Syracuse Pulls off Upset over Army

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The 13th-ranked Army West Point men's lacrosse team fell, 10-8, to #17 Syracuse in a back-and-forth battle at the Carrier Dome on Sunday.

The Black Knights went ahead 1-0 to start the game, but the Orange battled back to tie the score and lead throughout the rest of the game.

AJ Barretto had an outstanding performance with a career-high 18 saves. He recorded eight in the second quarter alone.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- For the fourth time this season, the Black Knights scored the first goal of the game.
- After maintaining the ball for three possessions with the new shot clock rules, Brendan Nichtern passed the ball from low to high finding Liam Davenport who was able to score on a high bounce, tripping up Drake Porter.
- The Orange answered with two unassisted goals to take a 2-1 lead.
- Nichtern connected with Alex Alacqua with three minutes to go in the opening quarter to tie things up, 2-2.
- Forty seconds later however, the Orange score their third unassisted goal of the evening to take the lead heading into the second.
- To start off the quarter, Syracuse had a delayed penalty in their favor, but back-to-back saves by Barretto at close range prevented a score.
- The Black Knights rebounded with a big one-on-one goal by Nicholas Garofano to knot the score up at 3-all.
- Syracuse registered two-straight scores 50 seconds apart to pull ahead 5-3 halfway through the second quarter.
- Barretto closed out the second with eight saves.
- The Orange pulled away 8-5 in the third quarter.
- Davenport and Manown scored goals for the Black Knights in the streatch.
- Davenport's was on a pass from Connor DeWitt, while Manown's was picked up on top of the crease and shoveled past Porter for the score.
- Two goals from Army kicked things off in the highly intense fourth quarter.
- Sean O'Brien had another rebounded goal and Manown posted an unassisted score to make it a one-goal game once again.
- The Orange netted an unassisted goal of its own at the 10:26 mark in the quarter, but Nichtern found the back of the net off a pass from Manown four minutes later.
- Syracuse netted an insurance goal with 1:10 remaining in the game to put things out of reach for the Cadets and pull off the upset.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Barretto had an outstanding performance in goal today, posting a career-high 18 saves which beats his previous record of 17 set earlier this season.
- The senior notched eight saves in the second quarter alone.
- Manown and Nichtern both had three points apiece in the game.
- Manown led the way with two goals and an assist, while Nichtern had one tally and two helpers.
- Davenport produced a career-high two goals in the game.
- Alacqua added a score and a helper in the game.
- The assist was the junior's first in his career.
- O'Brien and Garofano finished the contest with one goal, while DeWitt added one assist.
- Marcus Hudgins had a career performance on defense with four ground balls and a caused turnover.
- Johnny Surdick also contributed four ground balls and added a caused turnover.

- The Black Knights open Patriot League play next Saturday with a home game versus Lafayette.
