Army Snaps Streak, Defeats RIT at Home

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point hockey team snapped RIT's nine-game unbeaten streak Friday night with a 2-1 victory in front of its home crowd.Â

The Black Knights had yet another perfect penalty kill denying the Tigers on three chances, including a 6-on-4 advantage with under two minutes to play.Â

Trevin Kozlowski was seven seconds away from his first-career shutout and turned away 23 shots.Â

Tucker DeYoung and Matt Berkovitz scored their first goals of the season tonight as John Zimmerman increased his point streak to three games.Â

HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ Â
- The Black Knights controlled the pace of play in the first period outshooting RIT 10-3.Â
- Army hit two pipes in the second frame before putting one in the back of the net.Â
- With 20 seconds remaining on the power play, DeYoung scored his first of the year to give Army a 1-0 lead.Â
- Eric Butte and Zimmerman worked the puck around the perimeter to DeYoung who struck from on top of the right circle beating Logan Drakett stick side high.Â
- Army struck again with 5:48 to go in the game thanks to a faceoff win by John Keranen and a laser game-winning goal from the point by Berkovitz.Â
- The Black Knights were able to fight off an RIT 6-on-4 advantage late in the game, but the Tigers scored on a tip in with seven seconds to go to bring the score to 2-1 in favor of Army.Â
HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- The Black Knights posted another clean sheet on the penalty kill.Â
- Army denied three more extra-man opportunities and has not allowed a power play score since the season opener.
- The Cadets have killed off 37 penalties in a row which spans over 564:20 minutes of action and nine full games.
- Kozlowski made 23 saves in net.
- The junior netminder has posted 20 or more saves seven games this season.Â
- DeYoung posted his first-career power play goal tonight and the fifth goal in an Army sweater.Â
- The junior has registered 13-career points. It also marked DeYoung's first points against RIT.Â
- Berkovitz also netted his first of the season in the game and second in his career.
- He now totals 11 points.Â
- Berkovitz has registered two points opposite the Tigers in his three years of action.
- Zimmerman boasts five points in the last three games for the Black Knights.Â
- His season total for assists improves to 24 and points to 26.Â
- Keranen registered assist number four of the year as Butte's was his second.Â
- The pair now have four points apiece this season while the junior's career point total is 11.Â
- Army snapped RIT's nine-game unbeaten streak. It was the Black Knights' second win on home ice against the Tigers.Â
- The Cadets' last win against RIT was January 30th of 2015.Â
