WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army West Point director of cross country and track & field Mike Smith has announced the program's 2019-20 indoor track and field schedule.
"There are quite a few changes to our indoor schedule in 2020," Smith said. "The Patriot League Championship is now scheduled on the same weekend (last weekend in February) as almost all other conference championships. This change extends our indoor regular season, and has afforded us the opportunity to go to some very competitive meets that would otherwise be off our schedule because of conflicts with the conference championship."
The Black Knights will host three meets at Gillis Field House this season beginning with the season opening Crowell Open on Dec. 7.Â
"The Crowell is always a good test of our fall preparation for both our developmental people and our experienced returners," Smith said. "When we return from the holiday break we get rolling right away with the heart of the indoor season. Our first meet is a home, Thursday evening, open meet on January 9. That we will be a good evaluation tool of our winter break training. Â
Army will then head to Pennsylvania for the first of the team's two meets at Penn State University. It marks the start of a run of six consecutive road meets, headlined by the Army-Navy Star Meet in Annapolis on Feb. 8.Â
"The Nittany Lion Challenge at Penn State is a more competitive competition that will be a solid early season test for our top returners," Smith said. "The following weekend we head down to Virginia to a multi-team, multi-day competition at VMI. We will be able to take the majority of our team to this meet and it is a good opportunity to compete in multiple events that is somewhat similar to what we will face at the conference championship. The Terrier Invitational at Boston University on January 24-25 follows the VMI meet and is a step up in competitive level. We anticipate seeing quite a few of our Patriot League foes in Boston and the competitive level of the meet will help us to define both our conference roster and our Star Meet roster. The Penn State National Invite is a select meet so our competitive roster will be somewhat smaller as we prepare for the Star meet the following weekend."
The Cadets have seen a strong run of success in the Army-Navy Indoor Star Meet, as the women's team has won five consecutive matchups while the men have won two of the past three. Army swept the meet at West Point in 2019.Â
"Our February 8 meet is the Star Meet in Annapolis," Smith said. "The quality of this meet has risen in recent years and I expect more of the same this year. The week after the Star Meet marks our return to Boston to compete in the Valentine's Invitational. This meet annually produces some of the best performances in the NCAA so our travel party will be a select group of high caliber performers."
Ahead of the Patriot League Championship, the team will close out the home schedule with the all-new West Point Tune-Up.
"Our February 22 competition is a tune-up for the conference championship," Smith said. "We scheduled this as an opportunity for our entire team to get one more competitive effort in prior to the conference championship and for the coaches to further refine the conference roster. Our Patriot League Championship will be contested on a flat track at Lehigh on the final weekend in February and the NCAA championships follow two weeks later in Birmingham, Alabama."
In 2019, the Army men's track and field team claimed its first league title since 2010 while the women placed second at the Patriot League Championships.
"We are excited to get started with the season and to build on our competitive individual and team performances from 2018-2019."
