Army Women's Track Finishes Penn State National
January 26, 2019 | Women's Track and Field
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Army West Point women's track team closed out the Penn State National Open on Saturday.Â
The team was led by strong efforts from junior Haley Watson, who finished third in the women's 800m, and senior Abby Halbrook, who placed third in the women's mile.Â
COACH'S CORNER: Head Coach Mike Smith
"There were a lot of really good things that happened for us today. But that is not a surprise. Our kids rise to the level of competition and today against some really strong teams from the Big Ten, Ivy League and ACC, we performed very well.Â
Our throws women made some nice adjustments this week and it showed today in the shot put. Lauren Schultz and Emily Mikoud are just starting to get into a groove there, so I look forward to watching them take off in the coming weeks.
We also shined out on the track today in multiple areas. Our middle distance women were as advertised: tough and fighting to win events. Cassie Mundekis came within .50 seconds of her own school record in the 800 and Abby Halbrook followed suit in the mile, just missing her own mark set last year in this meet.Â
Our women's 4x400 finally broke through. We have felt like we could put up a good mark in that event and tonight we came close to running the school record. It's early, so I think there is more to come from that group.
All in all, a really strong day for our team and a lot of positive momentum going forward into the championship season."
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
Women's 800m: Haley Watson, 2:14.92, third place
Women's Mile: Abby Halbrook, 4:48.31, third place

UP NEXT: Army returns home for the Army-Navy Star Meet on February 2 at West Point.Â
