Cadets Open Up Arthur Ashe Invitational Victorious

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Black Knights men's tennis team got off to the start they wanted to begin the 2019 spring season, as Army defeated Michigan State, 4-2 on day one of the Arthur Ashe Invitational.
"Very, very close match," said head coach Jim Poling. "We won two doubles, which was good for us to start off, and then in singles, five out of six were three set matches. That's how close this was."
Senior David Mitchell was apart of the doubles clincher for the Cadets, as well as delivered the final point in singles to give the Black Knights the victory.
"This was a good start for us," added Poling. "The other two teams we're playing this weekend are good, so we [still] have two big matches coming up."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Doubles action opened with the plebe combo of Alejandro Quiros and Diego Huttepain getting the ball rolling with a 6-3 win at No. 3.
- After Michigan State took a 6-4 win at No. 1, it came down to David Mitchell and David Gorshein to give the Black Knights the early lead. The duo was pushed to a tiebreak, but prevailed with a 7-6 (7-4) to put Army up 1-0.
- Michigan State opened singles action with a straight sets win at No. 1.
- After dropping the first set, Huttepain put Army back ahead with a monster three-set match at No. 4 that finished with a 6-0 final frame.
- The Spartans would even the score again with a Nick Williams win at No. 5.
- Army would finish strong, with freshman David Gorshein putting the Black Knights on the cusp of victory at No. 6.
- Playing in the No. 2 spot, senior captain David Mitchell clinched it for Army in another three-set thriller.
