Army Plays to a 1-1 Draw with Columbia
September 07, 2018 | Men's Soccer
WEST POINT, N.Y. – After 110 minutes of action, the Army West Point men's soccer team drew even with Columbia, 1-1, in a double-overtime match on Friday night at Malek Stadium at Clinton Field.
"I'm proud of our guys against a strong Columbia team," head coach Russell Payne said. "You could see why they are the defending Ivy League champions. Our guys are a little disappointed not to have capitalized on the momentum we created from our courageous attacking and team defending in the first half. Our focus will now be in continuing to grow as we prepare for Siena on Tuesday."
The two sides were on the attack often and combined for 25 shots but in the end, the Black Knights (1-2-1) and Lions (1-1-1) both earned their first draws of the year.
Columbia, the defending Ivy League champions, managed to place nine shots on the Army goal, but Justin Stoll was stellar in between the pipes, tallying a season-best eight saves.
