Army and Marist Battle to Five Sets

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — After battling back in the second and third sets, the Army West Point volleyball team dropped a 3-2 decision to Marist on Tuesday night.Â
The Red Foxes claimed the first set with a two-point advantage, but the Black Knights rallied back in the second and third to take a 2-1 lead in the match.Â
Marist did not go down without a fight and claimed the final two sets for the victory.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE (Marist 25, Army 23)
- The Black Knights and Red Foxes went back and forth for the entirety of the set.Â
- Monica Eckford tallied back-to-back kills early in the action to give Army a 7-6 lead.Â
- The Cadets chipped away at the Red Foxes lead with four-straight points to jump ahead 17-16.
- Marist would take the set 25-23 though after holding a 16-12 advantage in points.Â
SET TWO (Army 25, Marist 16)
- The second set was very similar to the first with alternating leads throughout.Â
- A kill by Lisa Sullivan sparked a 7-2 run for Army with Emmy Barnhorst and Sydney Morriss following that up with a big block at the net to give Army a 16-11 lead.Â
- The Black Knights' run pushed them to claim the set 25-16 as Eckford earned the final point for Army.
- Sullivan had a standout performance in the second with six points and three digs.Â
SET THREE (Army 25, Marist 19)
- The Black Knights continued on their momentum from set two to take a commanding lead throughout the third.Â
- Army scored four straight points halfway through the action to increase its lead 17-10.Â
- After taking a timeout to reset, the Black Knights bounced back on a 5-2 run after a kill by Barnhorst and a block assist by the freshman and classmate Brianna Hartman.Â
- Another kill by Barnhorst gave the Cadets their set-clinching point.Â
SET FOUR (Marist 25, Army 15)
- The Red Foxes jumped out to a commanding 18-8 lead in the fourth helped along by a 14-3 scoring streak.Â
- Marist forced a fifth with a 25-15 victory.
SET FIVE (Marist 3, Army 2)
- The Red Foxes continued strong with a 4-1 lead in the fifth set.Â
- Army came back to tie things up at nine, but Marist would jump out to another lead.Â
- The Black Knights held the Red Foxes to match point for three attempts before they clinched the match with a 15-13 fifth set score.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND MATCH NOTES
- Barnhorst led the Black Knights in points with 14.Â
- The freshman notched 12 kills and four blocks.Â
- Morriss recorded a team-best six blocks in the match and nine kills.Â
- Cate Buckingham also had double-digit kills with 10 for the night.Â
- Hartman came in off the bench and posted eight kills and five total blocks while hitting .389.Â
- Nikki Lum had a season-high 30 assists in the match and Ana Oglivie had 27 digs.Â
UP NEXT
- The Black Knights head to Kingston, R.I., this Friday and Saturday for the URI Invitational.Â
- Army will face Rhode Island at 11 a.m. on Friday and Yale at 4 p.m.
- Saturday features another 4 p.m. matchup against New Hampshire.Â
