Black Knights Fall to #11 Florida, 3-1

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Army West Point volleyball team fell to 11th-ranked Florida Saturday, but was able to wrestle away set three from the Gators.

It was the third time in program history that the Cadets won a set against an SEC Opponent. The last time Army earned a set victory against a ranked opponent was opposite Pepperdine in 2009 when the Black Knights won 3-2.

The Cadets finished 2-1 on the weekend to place second at the Gators Invitational. Emmy Barnhorst and Ana Oglivie were named to the All-Tournament Team after their outstanding performances.Â

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET (Florida 25, Army 16)
- The Black Knights jumped ahead 8-5 after an early 4-0 run.
- Florida answered back with a six-point scoring streak of its own to take a 13-9 lead.
- The Gators maintained control of the set with a 20-14 lead and finished set one on a 5-2 rally.
SECOND SET (Florida 25, Army 12)
- Florida maintained dominant in the second set with a 17-6 edge.
- Army was unable to gain momentum and the Gators closed-out the set with three straight points holding the Cadets to 12 points.
THIRD SET (Army 25, Florida 20)
- With the set tied 10-10, the Black Knights rallied a comeback fueled by a four-point run fueled by a kill from Courtney Horace, a solo block by Barnhorst and two attacking errors by the Gators.
- Army increased its lead to 21-15 before Florida attempted a comeback.
- Poised for set point, 24-17, the Gators scored three straight, but a service error ultimately gave Army the set victory.
FOURTH SET (Florida 25, Army 16)
- Florida bounced back in the fourth and final set to take the match.
- The Gators jumped to a 16-11 lead and continued on a 4-2 rally to reach the coveted 20-point mark first and then to match point.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Barnhorst tallied 16 points on 15 kills and one of Army's three blocks.
- Cate Buckingham had seven kills on the day and was followed by Monica Eckford (6) and Brianna Hartman (5).
- Nikki Lum posted 18 assists in the match and Hannah Presley had 14.
- It was the third time in program history that the Cadets won a set against an SEC Opponent.
- The last time Army earned a set victory against a ranked opponent was opposite Pepperdine in 2009 when the Black Knights won 3-2.
UP NEXT
- Army opens Patriot League action next weekend with matches on Saturday and Sunday against Colgate and Holy Cross. Both matches begin at 4 p.m.
