Cadets Beat Jacksonville for Second-Straight Win

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — With a 65-59 point advantage on the night, the Army West Point volleyball team defeated Jacksonville Friday night, 3-1, in match two of the Gators Invitational.
This improves Army's streak to two straight.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE (Army 25, Jacksonville 15)
- For the second match today, the Black Knights captured the first set by a score of 25-15.
- Army led 13-10 in the set before really pulling away from the Dolphins fueled by an 8-3 run.
- The Black Knights went on to score four of the next five points to take the set 25-15.
- Courtney Horace scored three points in that stretch for the Cadets.
SET TWO (Jacksonville 28, Army 26)
- Jacksonville came hot out of the gate to gain a 6-2 advantage in the second frame.
- After slowly chipping away at the Dolphins' lead, the Black Knights tied the set at 17-all, and then claimed a lead at 20-18.
- Jacksonville would rally back to tie things up at set point, but the two teams would battle out for the remaining points.
- The Dolphins went ahead 26-25, but a kill by Hannah Presley would knot the score again at 26-26.
- Unfortunately, Jacksonville notched the next two points to claim the set, 28-26.
SET THREE (Army 25, Jacksonville 20)
- The Dolphins maintained their groove in the third with an early 7-0 run to take an 11-5 lead.
- However, the Cadets answered with nine straight points to re-take the lead (15-11) with Lisa Sullivan on the serve.
- Army was able to pull away from Jacksonville when a 3-0 scoring streak due to three consecutive errors by the Dolphins put the Black Knights up 21-17.
- Sullivan and Horace tallied two final kills, while Jacksonville committed two more errors to swing the set in favor of Army.
SET FOUR (Army 25, Jacksonville 21)
- With Jacksonville leading 16-13, the Black Knights posed a rally to clinch the match with a final set score of 25-21.
- The Cadets took a 19-18 lead after Sydney Morriss notched two kills and Emmy Barnhorst added another, but the Dolphins fought back to a 20-19 advantage.
- However a 6-1 run by the Black Knights clinched the set and ultimately the match.
- Morriss, Barnhorst, Sullivan and Horace notched points in the stretch.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND MATCH NOTES
- Horace had a standout game with a team-best 14 kills and two block assists.
- Barnhorst notched 13 kills and four block assists.
- Cate Buckingham returned to Army's lineup and contributed nine kills and hit .400.
- Hannah Presley led the team in blocks with five while also recording a career-high 30 assists.
- Ana Oglivie led the Black Knights defensively with 14 digs.
UP NEXT
- The Black Knights face the host No. 11 Florida Gators Saturday at 2 p.m.
