Army Surges Past Florida International on Friday

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Army West Point volleyball team surged past Florida International, 3-0, Friday at the Gators Invitational.
The Black Knights' win snapped a five match losing streak with the win. The Cadets played extremely disciplined limiting themselves to jut 12 errors, while FIU had 28.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE (Army 25, FIU 15)
- The Black Knights started strong in the first set with an 11-1 run to take a 14-5 lead.
- Emmy Barnhorst had a hand in four of the final six points in the stretch with three block assists and a kill.
- Army continued on to an 18-7 lead before FIU had a last minute surge.
- The Cadets maintained composure however to finish the set with a 25-15 lead.
- Barnhorst tallied 7.5 points in the first stand hit .500.
SET TWO (Army 25, FIU 20)
- With the second set tied 14-14, the Black Knights got into their groove and outscored the Panthers 12-6 to take it by a score of 25-20.
- There was a stretch with four-straight points by Army where Monica Eckford and Sydney Morriss each recorded a kill.
- Barnhorst tallied a solo block in the stretch.
- The Black Knights held an advantage in most set two categories including hitting percentage (.205-.047), kills (15-12) and blocks (2-1).
SET THREE (Army 25, FIU 18)
- The third set started off tight again with tie scores up until 11-11.
- Army responded with a 5-0 run to gain the lead at 16-11.
- The Black Knights were able to capitalize on Panthers errors throughout as well as making plays offensively and defensively to capture the set and ultimately the match.
- Eckford, Morriss and Barnhorst recorded Army's final three kills in the team's win.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND MATCH NOTES
- Barnhorst led the Black Knights with 18 points on 14 kills (.387) and seven blocks.
- Courtney Horace followed in kills with eight, while Lisa Sullivan (7), Eckford (5) and Morriss (5) all notched multiple kills in the match.
- Nikki Lum posted 21 assists as Hannah Presley boasted 15 to help Army's offense.
- Presley also had two service aces which is a career-high.
- Ana Oglivie tallied 15 digs on the day, while Kennedy Wortman had 11.
UP NEXT
- The Black Knights will take on Jacksonville later today at 5 p.m., while taking on the host No. 11 Florida Gators Saturday at 2 p.m.
