Army Bounces Back Against Quinnipiac

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Trailing after the first set, the Army West Point volleyball team clinched three straight sets to earn a 3-1 victory over Quinnipiac in its season opener.
The Black Knights improve to 9-0 over the Bobcats in the all-time series.
The Cadets are one of two teams undefeated after day one of the Army Invitational with a 1-0 record. UTSA is also 1-0 after the first set of contests.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET (Quinnipiac 28, Army 26)
- Trailing 16-7, the Black Knights rallied three straight points to cut Quinnipiac's lead in half.
- Kills from Sydney Morriss and Buckingham along with a Bobcat error brought the score to 16-10 in favor of Quinnipiac.
- The Black Knights kept their cool earning the 12th point after a long rally with Emmy Barnhorst tallying the kill.
- Army ended up on a 9-2 run to come within two (18-16).
- Quinnipiac held on though to take the set in extra points (28-26).
SECOND SET (Army 25, Quinnipiac 11)
- The Black Knights jumped out to an early lead in set two building off momentum from the first.
- An ace by Cate Buckingham gave the Cadets a 10-point advantage in the set at 17-7.
- Army then held Quinnipiac at bay with 11 points as it made its way to 25.
- An error by the Bobcats and a service ace by Allie Strong set the Black Knights up with a 23-11 lead.
- Then a kill by Lauren Janok set the Black Knights up for set point and a block at the net by her and Barnhorst clinched the set win for Army.
THIRD SET (Army 25, Quinnipiac 16)
- Army led to start this set as well taking a 14-8 edge to push Quinnipiac to a timeout.
- The Black Knights held a 15-7 advantage in kills in the set and hit .297 compared to the Bobcats' .069.
- To close-out the set, Army earned the final two points with Monica Eckford recording the final kill.
FOURTH SET (Army 27, Quinnipiac 25)
- This was a true back-and-forth competition with 11 tie scores and seven lead changes proving Army's perseverance.
- Quinnipiac was poised at set point, but the Black Knights' grit held them at bay for an Army comeback.
- Strong earned a kill to tie the score at 24-all, but a quick point by the Bobcats put them in the lead again.
- Two Quinnipiac errors and a final kill by Janok captured the team's first victory of the 2018 season.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Nikki Lum and Strong notched their first double-doubles of the year in the match.
- Lum recorded the eighth double-double of her career with 17 assists and 10 digs.
- Strong posted double-double number 11 on 10 kills and 14 digs.
- Janok made her collegiate debut with 33 assists, seven digs, three kills and four block assists.
- Fellow classmate Barnhorst was also a standout with 10 kills and a .292 hitting percentage.
- Most impressive however was her eight total blocks to lead both sides of the net.
- Morriss paced Army on the attack with 14 kills and a .357 hitting percentage, the top numbers for either team.
- Ana Oglivie had 16 digs and a service ace, while Buckingham notched 19 digs and a service ace as well.

- The Black Knights host two games on Saturday to close-out the Army Invitational. Army will face San Francisco at 12 p.m. and then UTSA at 7 p.m. both at Gillis Field House.
