Cadets Fall to San Francisco in Five Set Battle

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point volleyball team fell to San Francisco, 3-2, in a five set battle Saturday morning in the team's second match of the Army Invitational.

It was the first meeting between the two squads in program history.

Four Black Knights notched double-digit kills in the match, while two had double-digit assists and two others with double-digit digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET (Army 25, USF 21)
- Riding their momentum from last night's victory, the Black Knights started the day strong with a set one win.
- Monica Eckford set the final charge up with a kill for the team's 20th point which was followed by a kill from Sydney Morriss and an ace by Ana Oglivie.
- San Francisco fought back late in the set with a 4-1 run, but Army held the Dons off with a kill by Lisa Sullivan and Eckford for the final two points.
SECOND SET (USF 25, Army 20)
- It was all San Francisco in the second set with the Cadets hitting .054.
- The Dons went ahead 24-18 and Army fought back, but a kill by San Francisco closed-out the set at 25-20.
THIRD SET (Army 25, USF 18)
- The Black Knights came out with more flare in the third set improving tenfold from the second.
- Army led for a majority and fought to maintain that advantage.
- The Cadets jumped to 25 points after a 6-2 run over the Dons.
- Sullivan had two kills and a block in the stretch, while Morriss posted a kill and block herself.
- Cate Buckingham tallied set point on a kill set up by Lauren Janok.
FOURTH SET (USF 28, Army 26)
- Army and San Francisco played a one-point contest in the fourth trading points throughout.
- With a 21-17 lead, the Dons rallied back to take the set to extra points to force a fifth.
- The Black Knights recorded errors around a San Francisco kill giving the Dons a 28-26 advantage to take the set.
FIFTH SET (USF 15, Army 10)
- The Dons jumped ahead 8-2 in the fifth which was too much ground for the Black Knights to make up.
- Army battled to bring it within three at 10-7 in favor of USF, but back-to-back errors and two Dons kills prevented the full comeback.
- The Black Knights did not go out without a fight though and a block by Emmy Barnhorst and Janok kept things going.
- San Francisco however came back on the next play for match point.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Barnhorst led the team with 15 kills and was followed by Sullivan (13), Eckford (12) and Morriss (11).
- Janok posted 18 assists in the match, while Hannah Presley dished out 13.
- Oglivie and Allie Strong paced the team defensively with double-digit dig performances.
- For the second match in a row, Barnhorst was first on the team in blocks with six on the day. Â
