Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division I Women's Cross Country/Track & Field Teams
AUSTIN, Texas – Sophomore Lynne Mooradian headlined the 2017-18 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division I Women's Cross Country/Track & Field Teams by being voted as the top student-athlete among the first team selections on Thursday.
The official title of the honor for Mooradian is the Google Cloud Academic All-America® of the Year. She becomes only the second cadet from the U.S. Military Academy to earn this recognition, joining former men's lacrosse player Brendan Buckley who earned the honor in 2012. She is the first female cadet-athlete to take home this great honor.
"This is a tremendous honor for Lynne, our track and field program and the United States Military Academy at West Point and is well deserved," director of track and field and cross country Mike Smith said. "Lynne works hard at everything she does and is a great example of what is possible when you don't cut corners. West Point is a crucible of challenges designed to test the limits of its students and ultimately bring out the best in them."
Mooradian is the lone sophomore on the Google Cloud Division I Women's Cross Country/Track & Field Academic All-America® first team this year. She was named the Patriot League's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Mooradian is a 10-time Patriot League place-winner at a pair of league indoor and outdoor track & field championships. She was a member of the 2018 Patriot League outdoor champion 400-meter relay team and runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles.
"We have never tried to limit our students' ability to achieve in all areas of their West Point experience, and Lynne is a great example of just how good you can be when you put your mind to it," Smith added. "She is a star performer at this institution and now, with this award, she is recognized as a star among her peers across the country."
Mooradian was one of 28 members of the 47 honored on this year's Division I Academic All-America® Women's Cross Country/Track & Field teams with a GPA of 4.0 or better. She is a mechanical engineering major with a 4.23 grade point average and has earned numerous academic honors in the Patriot League and at the Academy.
She is one of the 17 members of the Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division I Women's Cross Country/Track & Field First Team and the average GPA of the team is 3.978.
"We knew when we recruited Lynne that we were competing to get one of the best students in America and, at the time of her appointment to West Point in the fall of 2015, she was one of the best candidates in the history of the Academy," Smith said. "But she is more than just a high performing student and athlete; she is a tremendous person and leader. People gravitate to her because of her character and personality and follow her because of the example she sets. We are lucky that she is here and fortunate that we have two more years with her. She embodies everything that is duty, honor, country and I am proud to coach her."
In her two seasons at West Point, Mooradian owns or shares five Academy records. She is the school record holder in the 100m hurdles (14.03 seconds) and the 60m hurdles (8.73 seconds). Mooradian has contributed to three relay records, including the 4x100m relay (45.69 seconds), the 4x400m relay (3:48.60) and the distance medley relay (11:37.13).
Four members – Elise Cranny of Stanford University, Erin Finn of the University of Michigan, Keturah Orji of the University of Georgia, and Alice Wright of the University of New Mexico – are three-time Division I Women's Cross Country/Track & Field Academic All-America® selections. Finn, Orji and Wright have been named to the first-team for three straight seasons, while Cranny was second team in 2017 and third team in 2016. Finn was the 2017 Division I Women's Cross Country/Track & Field Academic All-American of the Year. Two-time selections include Amy Cashin (West Virginia University), Stephanie Ferrante (Oklahoma State University), Jessica Harris (University of Notre Dame), Cassandra Gill (Iona College), Jordann McDermitt (Eastern Michigan University), and Eden Meyer (University of North Florida).
