April 08, 2018 | Baseball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Army West Point baseball team took the final contest of its three-game series with Lehigh, 10-1, here Sunday afternoon.
With the victory Army swept the weekend and are now in sole possession of first place in the Patriot League with a mark of 8-2. Lehigh dipped to 1-8 in conference play.
The Black Knights posted another overall solid effort on both sides of the ball.
Four cadet-athletes recorded multiple hits in the game, led by Josh White's 3-for-4 performance. The junior finished with two runs batted in and a team-best three runs scored.
Jacob Hurtubise, John McKenna and Anthony Giachin chipped in two hits each, while Hurtubise, Giachin and Drake Titus notched two RBI apiece to lead Army's offensive output.
On the hill, Daniel Burggraaf pitched 6.0 strong innings, allowing just one run on six hits. The junior fanned six during his time on the mound as well.
Jacob Carte and Joe Santoro then came in to finish off the final 3.0 innings to secure the win. Carte gave up one hit in 2.0 innings, while Santoro retired all three batters he faced in the ninth.
To open the game, Army scored two runs on two hits to jump on the Mountain Hawks early. Hurtubise led-off the contest with a single before Titus and Jon Rosoff reached base on back-to-back walks to load things up. Two batters later Giachin drilled a single up the middle to score two runs.
The Black Knights added a run in the top of the third and fourth to create a 4-0 gap between the teams. Trey Martin and Titus were both credited with an RBI during that stretch.
The home team finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth, when they tallied one run on two hits.
The Cadets quickly answered in the following frame though with four big runs to ultimately put the game out of reach at 8-1. McKenna, Martin, Giachin and White all touched home plate during the inning.
Army closed out its scoring in the eighth with two additional runs after Hurtubise and Titus both tallied an RBI.
