Black Knights Make it Six Straight With DH Sweep
April 10, 2018 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point baseball team battled back for two come-from-behind victories over Manhattan here Tuesday.
With the 2-1 and 3-2 midweek seven-inning doubleheader sweep, Army improves to 18-14 overall and are the winners of six-straight games.
In the opener, Manhattan broke a pitchers duel in the fifth inning when it drilled a shot over the left field fence for the 1-0 edge.
The Black Knights answered in the following inning though with two runs on three hits. Jon Rosoff started the rally by registering a one-out triple to right center that brought home Drake Titus from second. Titus reached base during the previous at bat thanks to a walk before advancing to second on a wild pitch. John McKenna then notched what ended up being the game-winning run batted in when he singled up the middle during the ensuing play to score Rosoff.
Right-handed pitcher Carter Van Gytenbeek came in for relief in the seventh and sat the Jaspers down in order to earn his first save of the year.
Army jumped in front early in Game 2 after notching one run on one hit in the opening frame. Jacob Hurtubise tallied a leadoff walk before the sophomore swiped his nation-leading 25th stolen base to shift him into scoring position. Rosoff then brought him home one batter later following a single.
Manhattan wasted little time trailing as it went yard for the second time on the day over the left field fence in the second inning.
The Jaspers then took their first lead of the day during the top of the third frame when Paul Genners started a small one-out rally with a double. He was shifted over to third on a groundout before scoring during the next at bat thanks to a wild pitch.
And back-and-forth the contest went as the Cadets responded with the tying run in the bottom half. Hurtubise earned a one-out walk before Titus singled to place two runners on. During the ensuing at bat, the two sophomores advanced up a base following a wild pitch. Rosoff then flied out to center field, which allowed Hurtubise enough time to touch home plate.
The game remained tied at 2-2 until Brendan Siriani started the bottom of the fifth inning with a leadoff walk. He advanced to second on a wild pitch to shift him into scoring position. Hurtubise then grounded out during the next at bat to advance pinch runner Rob Regine to third base. On the ensuing play, Regine scored what ultimately was the game-winning run via a wild pitch.
The Black Knights then worked their way out of a small jam in the sixth inning to keep their one-run lead intact.
Van Gytenbeek got the call once again in the seventh and shut the door with a one, two, three inning to earn his second save of the year in a matter of hours.
Rosoff led Army's offense, finishing 3-for-5 in the twin bill with three RBI and one run. McKenna was the only other cadet to post multiple hits on the day as he tallied two.
