Cadets Bounce Back for 3-1 Win Over Columbia
April 24, 2018 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point baseball team ended a short three-game slump with a 3-1 victory over Columbia here Tuesday night.
The Black Knights scored one run in the opening frame before adding on in the fifth to create a 2-0 gap between the teams. The Lions cut the lead in half in the top of the eighth but the Cadets responded with one final run in the bottom half to ultimately put the game away.
Army jumped on rookie pitcher Timmy Post early, registering one run on three hits in the first inning. The Cadets' first run came after Jon Rosoff singled to center field to score Jacob Hurtubise from third. During that frame, Hurtubise stole his 31st base of the year, which ties him with Miguel Gastellum for the program record.
Trey Martin extended the Black Knights' advantage with a leadoff solo home run to left field in the fifth inning. That blast was the junior's fifth career long ball and Army's third of the season.
The Lions made things interesting in the top of the eighth when they cut the lead in half following singles by Michael Kuzbel and Ben Porter. The Cadets answered though in the bottom half after an Anthony Giachin single scored Anfernee Crompton from second.Â
The Black Knights then held on in the top of the ninth to secure their 23rd victory of the season.Â
Army received stellar pitching from starter Cam Opp and reliever Jacob Carte. The two combined to go 5.2 innings of hitless baseball, and relinquished just one, two-out single in 7.0 innings of work.Â
Six different cadet-athletes recorded one hit in the game, while Giachin, Rosoff and Martin accounted for Army's three runs batted in.
