Softball Hosts Syracuse in Home Opener

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point softball team will battle it out on the field in its home opener against Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponent Syracuse on Wednesday afternoon in a doubleheader at the Army West Point Softball Complex beginning at 2 p.m.
Prior to Wednesday's meeting, the Black Knights and Orange have only meet twice, with Syracuse taking both contests in West Point, N.Y., 18 years ago. The matchup with Syracuse marks the second all-time meeting against an ACC opponent for Army and the first since Feb. 27, 2004 against Florida State.

ARMY (10-16)
- Army opened Patriot League play by taking two of three from Bucknell on the road this past weekend.
- The Black Knights have won each of their last four home openers and eight of their last nine.
- Freshman pitcher Courtney Springman was on a tear this past week finishing with a 2-1 record. For the week, she held a 0.44 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 20.2 innings pitched. The Norco, Calif., native currently leads the Patriot League in ERA (1.83) and strikeouts (85).
- The Cadets had a surge of power this past weekend against the Bison with seven extra-base hits in the three games combined.
SYRACUSE (15-11)
- Syracuse has been tested this season against some of the top teams in the nation and is coming off a three-game series with ACC foe, No. 14/12 Florida State this past weekend. The Orange were swept and outscored 12-4 in the three outings.
- The Orange do not hurt teams with the long ball, but find the gaps and compile a bevy of extra-base hits. As a team, Syracuse has accumulated 37 doubles and 14 triples in 26 games.
- Bryce Holmgren leads the conference with a .468 average at the dish, with a team-best 36 hits, nine doubles and 24 RBIs. She also holds a .584 slugging and a league-best .576 on-base percentage with four stolen bases and 19 runs scored.
- In the circle, the Orange have two solid starting options in Alexa Romero and Anna MarieGatti. Romero boasts a team-best 1.64 ERA and has fanned 143 batters in 98.1 innings of work. She is 10-7 on the season and currently holding opponents to a .153 average. MarieGatti has a 3.59 ERA in 15 appearances.
