WEST POINT, N.Y. — Army West Point softball head coach Jen Consaul introduced the newest member of her coaching staff on Monday, revealing John Rama will join the staff for the 2026 season.
Rama, an inspiring and enthusiastic softball coach, has built his career on building strong, positive connections with players at all levels and ages. Rama is also a former NYPD officer with over a decade of coaching experience, training, and developing players for nationally ranked and collegiate softball programs.
Before arriving at West Point, Rama served as a head coach and assistant coach for Team Long Island, specifically for their 16U teams, for 12 years. Since 2013, Rama led the team to multiple winning seasons, including multiple championships and playoff appearances, plus supported several athletes in securing Div. I and Div. II commitments.
Alongside Team Long Island, Rama served as the head trainer for OC Bombers Softball since September of 2023. While there, Rama provided one-on-one and semi-private coaching to athletes and developed individualized training plans to improve player performance and confidence on and off the field. He coached players to achieve acceptance to top-tier clubs and Div. I college programs, oversaw strength and conditioning programs and instilled importance of fundamentals in throwing and fielding.
He also served as a camp and clinic coach for Lady Diamond & Lady Rangers Travel Softball. Since 2012, Rama has been hired by coaches to develop and lead customized camps and clinics for travel teams. He also customized skills focus and training style to align with team dynamics and address deficiencies.
Rama not only has experience coaching in the travel softball world, but has also served as an assistant coach at the Div. I, Div. III and high school levels.
Most recently, Rama served as a volunteer assistant coach at Fordham University from Sept. 2020 through March 2021. During his time in the Bronx, Rama worked closely with infield, outfield, and pitching units on reinforcing technique and building player confidence and assisted in analyzing game film to identify opportunities and develop game strategy.
Rama also coached at the Div. III level from Jan. 2018 to Sept. 2020, acting as an assistant coach at The College of Saint Vincent. While on the Dolphins' staff, Rama rolled out a new program with highly effective drills to enhance hitting and infield and outfield mechanics.
At the high school level, Rama served as the head varsity softball coach at Sacred Heart Academy in Hempstead, N.Y., from Sept. 2016 to Jan. 2018. Rama helped revive the program, implementing player development and team-building initiatives that resulted in two straight winning seasons, a divisional championship appearance in 2017 and a playoff appearance in 2018.
His first coaching job lasted from 2015 to 2016, serving as an assistant softball coach at Archbishop Malloy High School in Queens. Rama collaborated with the head coach and athletic director on training and team logistics and implemented new training techniques to focus on key areas of improvement.
Prior to his softball coaching experience, Rama worked for VIP Protection from 2009 to 2011, providing close protection and advance planning for the CBS Early Show as contract security specialist entrusted with ensuring the security of employees, facilities, executives, and high-profile celebrities.
Rama earned his bachelor's degree in criminal science in 2009 from SUNY Empire State College. Before college, the Warwick, N.Y. native served as a patrol officer for the NYPD from 1998 through 2004.
