Second Half Surge Plagues Army in Home Opener
February 17, 2018 | Women's Lacrosse
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's lacrosse team saw its 2018 home opener spoiled by Hudson Valley rival Marist who escaped with a 14-11 win Saturday at Michie Stadium.
The Black Knights dropped to 1-1 on the season, while the Red Foxes improved to 1-0.
After Samantha Stewart handed the home side a 1-0 lead 1:03 into the contest, the Black Knights jumped out to a 4-1 lead with a trio of goals in a span of two-minute-and-42-seconds.
Marist slowly chipped away at the deficit throughout the remaining 12 minutes of the first half and brought it within one at the break, 7-6.
The visitors evened the score with the first goal of the second half on a free position attempt, but Army managed to respond with a pair of goals by Amy Johnston and Rilee Scott. The two sides traded goals until the Red Foxes once again drew even at 10 apiece. They took their first lead of the game with 16:33 remaining on Kelly George's first-career goal to make it an 11-10 contest.
Marist stretched it to a three-goal lead from there before Army's resistance kicked in with Maddie Miller's third goal of the game. The Red Foxes added a final insurance tally with 3:11 left in the game, from which the Black Knights were never able to recover.
Rachel Hornick and Manuela Cortes scored two goals each in the game, while Hornick and Scott were the only two Black Knights to score a goal and dish out an assist.
