West Tabbed As CSFL Player of the Year
December 04, 2018 | Sprint Football
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Senior quarterback Keegan West of the Army West Point sprint football team was named the Most Valuable Player of the Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) on Tuesday afternoon.
A total of 14 Black Knights were honored by the league with eight first-team selections, five second-team honorees and one honorable mention.
West, who earned his third all-league honor, led the league's top offense by posting the most completions (163), pass attempts (267), passing yards (1,926) and passing touchdowns (21), while accounting for the fewest interceptions (3). All were career highs for the West Point, N.Y., native as he contributed the third highest single-season totals in program history for passing yards and touchdowns.
He averaged more than 275 yards per game and eclipsed 300 yards against Pennsylvania (374 yards) and Cornell (308 yards). Additionally, West threw multiple touchdowns in six of the team's seven contests, including three or more in five games.
Along with West, Tom Williamson, Patrick Riley, Seppi Ortman, NaVonte Dean, Zach Lechthaler, Tate Blessinger and Desmond Young collected All-CSFL First Team nods. Young and Williamson are the only reigning all-league selections as Young was named to the first team for the second time in as many seasons. Williamson improved upon his honorable mention selection last year.
Williamson was one of West's favorite targets, tying for the team-lead with 35 receptions for 416 yards and a league-high 10 touchdowns, all of which were career highs. The Dallas, Texas, native scored multiple touchdowns in four of Army's seven games, including a personal best three-score effort against St. Thomas Aquinas.
Riley started all seven games on the offensive line and blocked for the CSFL's top offensive unit that averaged 38.4 points and 402.4 yards per game.
Ortman flourished as Army's first-year kicker, going 8-for-12 on field goals, including a season-long 38-yarder at Post. The Lafayette, Calif., native connected on a season-high three field goals against Cornell, all coming in the first quarter. He was also a perfect 31-for-31 on PATs, including a season-high eight makes against St. Thomas Aquinas.
Dean contributed heavily for the Black Knights in the trenches on the defensive side of the ball, finishing second in the league with nine sacks. The Fairfax, Va., native tallied 34 tackles, including 20 solo stops and 11.5 tackles for loss, as well as tying for the league-lead in forced fumbles with three.
Lechthaler captained the Army defense which allowed the fewest points and yards per game at 7.3 and 202.7, respectively. The York County, Va., native notched career highs in tackles (38), fumbles forced (3) and fumbles recovered (1), while earning three sacks for the third straight season.
Blessinger erupted for a team-high and personal-best 41 tackles and 26 solo stops while adding 7.5 tackles for loss. The Jasper, Ind., native ranked fourth across all CSFL teams for total tackles, including a career-high 14 stops at Navy in the Star Game.
Young continued to build off his productive 2017 campaign by shutting down the opponent's top receiver each game. The Murrieta, Calif., native totaled 12 tackles and seven pass breakups, in addition to a blocked kick as a junior. He documented a season-high four tackles and five breakups in the season-opener at Chestnut Hill.
Clayton Carter, Nitai Chun, Jesse Helms, Mike Shannon and James Scroggins were Army's representatives on the All-CSFL Second Team. Helms collected his third straight second team recognition, while Scroggins garnered his second consecutive after being an honorable mention in 2016. Additionally, Carter earned his second straight second-team honors.
Carter posted career highs with 28 catches for a team-best 467 yards and four touchdowns. The Indianapolis, Ind., native ranked in the top-five in the league in receiving yards (467, 3rd), yards per game (66.7, 3rd), yards per catch (16.7, 4th) and receptions (28, 4th). He hauled in at least three passes in all seven games, including a personal-best seven receptions for 116 yards in the CSFL Championship Game.
Chun was a reliable option for West in his first season, tying for the team-lead with 35 receptions for 418 yards and one touchdown. The Gardena, Calif., native contributed a team-high 14 receptions and 123 yards against Pennsylvania and scored his first-career touchdown at Post.
Helms captained Army's offensive line from the center, leading the blocking unit for the CSFL's top offensive unit that averaged 38.4 points and 402.4 yards per game.
Shannon posted career highs in his final season with 25 receptions for 274 yards and two scores. The Bowie, Md., made a season-high five catches in back-to-back games against St. Thomas Aquinas and Penn and compiled a personal best 74 yards opposite the Quakers.
Scroggins was a staple of the Black Knights' defense as he documented his third consecutive season with at least 30 tackles. The West Palm Beach, Fla., native totaled 38 tackles, the second highest mark on the team, which includes two tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. He added an interception and a league-high three fumble recoveries throughout his final season.
Onorino Tamburri was the team's lone honorable mention. Tamburri rewarded the coaches in his first season as a starter by posting personal bests in tackles (34), solo tackles (15), assisted tackles (19), tackles for loss (1.0) and interceptions (1). The Marlboro, N.Y., native finished fifth on the team in tackles.
